Hello, I would like to utilize a stacked column chart to visualize the number of jobs at multiple operations. I like the stacked column because each column represents an operation and the height of that column shows the load at that operation.
The problem I'm running into is about color coding the individual jobs to match the specific part type going through.
I can use the part type in my legend field and it divides up the columns into a specific color for each part type, or I can use the job # in the legend field and it divides my columns to show each individual job number.
You can see the two different versions of the visuals in the picture above with the same data.
Is there a way to essentially combine these two visuals into one? I would like the stacked columns to show every job #, however I would like the colors to be different based on the part type. It seems like conditional formatting is not allowed in a stacked column chart once you use the legend field.
I am open to other suggestions of how to achieve a similar result. The main goal at the end of the day is to have a visual color coded by part type, but still have a convenient way to see the job information without hopefully using a dril down or tooltip hover.
Let me know if you need more information as well.
Hi @RyanStewart ,
I created some data:
As far as I know, the Conditional Color Formatting option works when you don't have legend fields enabled and add multiple fields to the Chart Values field, if you have legend fields enabled, you can only manually select each Legend in Column to give the corresponding color.
Power BI stacked column chart can only place one field in the legend, you can try to create a create column to merge the two columns together.
Create calculated column.
Column =
[Part Type]&"-"&[Job.oper]
You can submit an idea for it at Home (microsoft.com) and wait for users with the same needs as you to vote for you to help make it happen as soon as possible.

I appreciate the suggestion to make a combined column of Part Type and Job, but I don't think it will give me what I'm looking for. I still need to enter that combined column into the "Legend" field to get the separation, but then I lose the ability to change the colors based on part type.
I think you're right that I need to submit a ticket to Microsoft to make this feature change, because it seems like at this point Power BI is unable to do what I'm looking for.
Thank you,
Ryan Stewart
