How can I create a simple bar chart with unique categories on the vertical axis and corresponding dates along the horizontal axis.
I have found that even when all the data types are set correctly (according to Modelling), Power BI will always *count* the values rather than take the date values themseslves.
(In other words I'm trying to do something that is extremely simple in Excel but seems impossible in Power BI).
Data example:
Order Ref | Date
A | 10-01-2017
B | 31-01-2017
C | 02-02-2017
This is typically very simple to do in Power BI. Can you share the model, or some screen shots of the data types or issue that you are seeing?
I just loaded in some data as in the table below. Date is in date data type, and Ref is in text data type. I add Date to the Axis of a bar chart, Ref to the Legend, and Count of Ref to the Value. Is this visual what you were looking for?
Thank you for your response. Unfortunately that's not quite what I'm after.
The end goal is to replcate a chart I created in Excel. This is a clustered bar chart where all the series are 100% overlapped, and one of the series is formated completely white (fill and outline) to give the appearance of bars which cover a date period:
The first step I was attempting was to create a bar chart with just one or two series. Here's a screenshot of the dummy data I was working with (the data type is 'Date/Time' for both START and FINISH fields and yet I can only get the data to be displayed as 'Count' or 'Count (Distinct)' when I try to create a chart):
Hi @pjb,
Based on your description, I'd like to suggest you use the gantt visual, it will more suitable for your requirement.
