Card (NEW) Reference Label w/Detail and Tabular Layout is cutting off text and adding right padding.

marcm92_1-1748947479006.png

Posted about this 6+ months ago so wondering if there is much in the way of an update or viable workaround:

From my own experience (aware I may be making a mistake!) using 'Tabular' layout for Card(New) Reference labels with "Detail" activated results in no possible way to have readable/legible text in reference labels.

Instead, the 'Value Area' slider seems only to determine the size of the invsible block that truncates text to the left or right of itself while taking up space in the middle of the label.

In my examples above, visually, there is enough room to fit the content in a tabular layout. However, the right padding that gets added once 'detail' is turned on renders the setting unsable.

The only option I have found so far that works is by increasing the size of the card to an unreasonably large size, taking up too much space on my reports.

Is there any workaround for this that doesn't involve overlaying additional elements? Am I doing something incorrectly or is this a known bug being worked on?

Thanks!

EDIT: For anyone googling the same issue, as of July 2025 this still seems to be an unfixed bug in PowerBI.

Hi @marcm92 ,

This is known issue with the new Card visual, especially when using the "Tabular" layout and enabling "Detail" for Reference labels. As you mentioned, the right padding and text truncation make it very difficult to display legible and readable reference label text, even when there seems to be enough space visually.

What can you try?

  1. Check for the latest updates:

    • Make sure you’re using the latest version of Power BI Desktop. Microsoft has been releasing regular updates and visual tweaks, so sometimes these layout bugs get addressed in newer releases.
  2. Adjust Value Area and Padding:

    • Experiment with the “Value Area” slider and padding/margin options (if available) in the formatting pane.
    • Sometimes reducing or increasing the value area can help, but as you mentioned, this often doesn’t fully solve the issue for detailed/tabular labels.
  3. Switch to ‘Sentence’ Layout (if possible):

    • The “Sentence” layout seems to render reference labels more clearly, as in your examples.
    • If readability is the top priority, this layout may offer temporary workaround.
  4. Submit Feedback to Microsoft:

    • If you haven’t already, use the “Send Frown” or “Feedback” feature in Power BI Desktop to report this specific layout problem.
    • The Power BI team prioritizes bugs and usability issues that are actively reported by users.

Current Workarounds:

  • Unfortunately, as of now, there is no native way to fully fix the truncation and excessive padding in the Tabular layout with “Detail” turned on, other than increasing card size or overlaying custom elements.
  • Some users have created custom visuals or used combination of separate cards for reference labels, but understand you want to avoid extra overlays.

Summary:

  • This is design limitation in the current Card (New) visual with tabular/detail reference labels.
  • Keep your Power BI up to date, experiment with formatting, and consider using the “Sentence” layout as workaround.
  • Submitting feedback to Microsoft increases the chances of proper fix in future update.

If you find new workaround or if an update resolves this, please share it here for others!

Hope this helps!

Seems to be an unfixed bug in PowerBI so I would say it's not exactly resolved, thanks for your help though!

@marcm92 ,

Thank you for following up!

If you want to escalate or report this issue directly to the Microsoft Power BI team, you can use the following methods:

1. Send Feedback via Power BI Desktop:

  • In Power BI Desktop, go to Help Send Feedback Send Frown.
  • This sends your feedback (including screenshots and usage data, if you allow) directly to the Power BI product team.

2. Post or upvote in the Power BI Ideas forum:

3. Microsoft Support (for enterprise customers):

  • If you have support plan, you can open support ticket through the Microsoft 365 admin center.

For community-based escalation, sharing the issue here (in this thread) with as much detail as possible is already great step, as Microsoft product team members do monitor these forums.

Let me know if you need template message or more specifics on any of these steps!

Thanks,
