Cannot publish Power BI Desktop report to Power BI service (via replace)

Hi all,

recently I have an weird issue with Power BI publishing.

I am an admin of two workspaces:

  • DEV&TEST
  • PROD

In DEV&TEST, I am able to publish Power BI Desktop report (4.41MB) and replace the older version of PowerBI report with the same name.

However, I am not able to do the same in PROD workspace. Below are the error message I got:

Sorry, you no  longer have the permission required to publish this file. Please contact your security admin for details.

I have tried the methods of

  • Log out and log in
  • Uploading pbix file directly in the PROD workspace, the file was successfully uploaded. But the report link is different because new objects (Report and Dataset) with the same name are created, which we want to prevent.

And idea how I can fix the issue?

Any feedback appreciated.

Thats odd, this happened to me always when i forgot to relink my data model from prod server to dev server that i had two reports and models with the same name in one workspace.

i highly recommend you download an ALM toolkit install it and you can access it theough external tools tab in power bi, this tool allows you to connect to two reports and see the differences between them. This way you can identify faster what is the difference bezween your prod/dev or between two prod reports in your case

Thank you Olgad.

In the view-linage the old report just stayed as before with a single data source (dataverse). Where the newly published one is with 3 data source (dataverse, 2 excel workbooks from Sharepoint).
Not sure why it prevents overwritten...

Hi, are you using different data bases for dev and prod? New report can be created in prod only if it is a different data connection in this report rather than the one used when publishin that old prod report. Check where your old report is pointing to in terms of data and the one you are trying to publish.
if you have Premium then better navigate through the development pipelines, then you minimize the risk of such issues happening

Hi @olgad ,

thanks a lot for your reply. In DEV&TEST and PROD are exactly the same data model (resource) and report behind. And I have tested publish PROD report to PROD workspace and it works as well.

So currently,

in DEV&TEST workspace are 3 pairs of report and dataset:

  • PBI_DEV
  • PBI_TEST
  • PBI_PROD

in PROD workspace are 2 pair of report and dataset:

  • PBI_PROD(old): somehow broken and cannot be replced with new publishment
  • PBI_PROD

We want to prevent the need to update the report link. Because PBI_PROD(old) and PBI_PROD have different url.
