Cannot connect to google accounts through google sheets connector

I can no longer connect to my google account through google sheets connector. Reports that were pulling data from google sheets stopped updating about 3 weeks ago. I am also unable to create any new connections to google sheets.

A popup asks me to connect to the google account. WHen I click Sign in, the "Something went wrong" error message pops up. See below screenshots.

I tried reinstalling PowerBI desktop, but the issue persists. Anyone know of any solutions?

Hi @rmechoor ,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Fabric Community.

Thanks for reporting this, this is a known issue with the Google Sheets connector in power bi desktop. It started appearing from around mid june 2025. Here the sign in process is failing because of the changes in the Google's authentication flow and getting the error.

An official fix has not yet been released but a quick workaround is like, if the report is published to the service, go to the dataset settings and under the Data source credentials, re authenticate the google sheets connection, refresh works here.

And also I recommend submitting your detailed feedback and ideas through Microsoft's official feedback channels. Feedback submitted through these channels is frequently reviewed by the product teams and can contribute to meaningful improvements.

Hi @rmechoor

Unfortunately, the error message shown here ("Something went wrong") doesn’t include specific technical details, so we can only make a few educated guesses and test possible solutions:

  1. Google Account Permissions: It’s possible that something changed in the permissions associated with your Google account. Power BI Desktop may no longer have access to your Google Sheets due to updated security policies or revoked consent. Try the following:

    • Go to your Google Account → Security → Third-party apps with account access → Remove Power BI if listed.

    • Then, open Power BI Desktop again and reconnect to Google Sheets to re-authorize access.

  2. Power BI Desktop Version: If you recently updated or reinstalled Power BI Desktop, it’s possible the Google Sheets connector behavior changed. In this case:

    • Uninstall your current version of Power BI Desktop completely.

    • Reinstall the latest version from the official Microsoft site.

    • Alternatively, try an older version (available from the Microsoft Download Center) to check if the issue is version-specific.

  3. Browser/Network Issues: Power BI relies on your default browser for OAuth authentication. If there's a misconfiguration, outdated cookies, or browser extensions interfering:

    • Try setting your default browser to Edge or Chrome (whichever wasn’t used before).

    • Clear cache and cookies.

    • Ensure no browser extensions (especially ad-blockers or privacy tools) are interfering.

  4. IT/Network Restrictions: If you're on a managed device or behind a corporate firewall or VPN, security restrictions might be blocking the OAuth redirect. Try disconnecting from VPN or using a personal network to test.

  5. Check Google Workspace Admin Settings (if applicable): If you're using a Google Workspace account, the admin may have restricted third-party OAuth connections. Ask your admin to review any recent changes.

If none of the above works, I recommend opening a ticket with Microsoft Power BI support and/or checking with Google support to verify if there are known changes to the OAuth handling or API access.
