I am doing a relatively "simple" Advanced visual filter opertion, looking for either of a couple letters to be present in a field:
That works fine, but when I remove the second criterion from the filter (removing the "e") the Apply filter button is still greyed out. At present I have to clear everything and start over. That is not a big deal right now, but later I will be searching for any one of multiple different letters and will want to remove one of them and update it without having to start over. Suggestions?

Yeah, looks like "Clear Filter" is your only option

Note: There is a funny side effect where you can enforce more than two "or" conditions by first selecting three or more items in the basic filtering and then switching to Advanced filtering.
