Can drill through be used from a clustered bar chart using a hidden ID?

Hi all,

I have a clustered bar chart showing fund values against the names of the funds:

When I use the fund name I can Drill Through to a Fund Datasheet - this works fine. However, some fund names are duplicated so I should be using the FundID (which is held in the same table as the Fund Name). Unfortunately, as soon as I put the FundID in the Tooltips well (according to the Microsoft documentation) and update the target Fund Datasheet with the FundID, the drill through does not appear on the source bar chart.

I have tried creating a text version of the FundID and the only way to make the drill through work is by displaying the (text) FundID as the primary Y axis.

Is this achievable from a clustered bar chart?

Many thanks in advance

@bexbissell  Are you referring to this Microsoft documentation?
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/create-reports/desktop-visual-tooltips?tabs=desktop-new

If that’s what you’re referring to, then you first need to drill down and then drill through to make it work. I’ve attached a sample file on the GIF for your reference.

Hi @bexbissell,

Have you had a chance to review the solution we shared by @kushanNa @danextian @wardy912 ? If the issue persists, feel free to reply so we can help further.

Hi @bexbissell

It's a bit difficult to provide a solution right away without looking at a sample PBIX showing the issue. I'm also a bit confused about what your expected output is here.

For example, if you have a fund name ABC with FundID 001 and the same fund name ABC with FundID 002, how should the data appear when you drill through?

Hi, thanks for taking the time to reply.

In the bar chart, I have many funds listed from largest value to smallest. The expected output is to select a Fund (say ABC that has ID 002), right-click and drill through to see more detailed informatoin about Fund ABC / ID 002 and not Fund ABC / ID 001.
The documentation indicates that if I drop the Fund ID into the Tooltips well and make the target drill through page accept the Fund ID it should work but in this case I lose the ability to Drill through from the source bar chart.
I thought that maybe the drill through value should be text, so created a text versoin of the ID but that didn't work either.
BTW: both Fund Name and Fund ID are in the same table.

Hi @kushanNa,

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. This approach does indeed result in the correct outcome but it feels like a workaround.

In a table, the FundID can be hidden as the first column, so funds with same name are not aggregated and when a Fund Name is selected, right-clicked and drilled through, the desired outcome is acheived.

Is there no other way than right-clicking, drilling-down (to the FundID) and then drilling through?

Thanks in advance,
Andy

Hi @bexbissell,

Currently, I believe the workaround suggested by @kushanNa,is a viable workaround, and it is consistent with how drill-through functions in Power BI.

Thank you.

Hi @bexbissell

If you only have the fund name displayed in the cluster chart, your bar chart will merge all of the values for that name forcing the drillthrough to show all entries of that fund name, you could sort by ID in a table on your drillthrough page to differentiate between IDs.

You could add the fundID to the legend of the bar chart, that way you can easily distinguish between IDs, and right click the section of the bar you need to drillthrough on to only show that ID.

Another option would be to create a new column that combines the name and ID and add this to your y axis, this will give you separate bars that will make the bar chart easier to understand, as well as giving you the correct drillthrough details.

I hope this helps, please give kudos and mark as solved if it does!

A drillthrough page can accept multiple columns. If you want to drillthrough by Fund ID, add it to the drillthrough page.

Thanks for the reply. I have added the FundID to the target Drill through page and you no longer have Drill through as an option on the right-click when selecting a fund on the source page.

Did you add  FundID as well to the originating visual. Drillthrough works only if the same column in the visual is used int he drillthrough page.
