I've see how one can upload a custom theme and make a variety of adjustments to the canvas. But I don't really understand how much of this can one just set up as being the "default" setting for creating a Power BI report, or whether one has to basically create an example report, and then re-use that everytime one creates a new report?
The question extends to the preferences for how you configure the various visuals.....But I guess for most of these you can't set up preferences as defaults.

Hello @Walt1010,
You cannot directly set a default custom theme or canvas settings that apply automatically to every new report you create.
However, you can work around this by creating a template file (.PBIT) with your theme, canvas settings, and visual configurations. Then, you can use this template as the starting point for all new reports.
Hope this helps.

@Walt1010 - You can upload a theme file to any report, you do not have to create the report first.
Moreover, you can use one of the many Theme Generators to create a theme file JSON that you can upload before beginning the report build. Many of these generators allow you to set standards for visual formatting, where desktop does not.
Here's a great round up of them: https://community.fabric.microsoft.com/t5/Community-Blog/Power-BI-Theme-Generators/ba-p/2265899
My favourite is: themes.pbix by POINT
