Build permissions for a composite semantic model in desktop
I have two semantic models:
1. Main model
2. Sub model – a composite model that uses DirectQuery over AS to the main model.
A user has Build permission on the sub model and Read permission on the main model.
With this setup, the user can create reports in the Service from their My Workspace without issues.
However, if the user wants to create report-level measures, they need to use Power BI Desktop.
In Desktop, they get a permission error when building visuals with the same set of permissions.
It only works if I also grant Build permission on the main model — but I don’t want to give Build on the main model.
Question:
In this scenario, is Build permission required on both models for Desktop report authoring?
Or is there any workaround that allows report measures in Desktop without granting Build on the main model?
Build permission is required on both the main and sub models when creating report-level measures in Desktop.
No known workaround to avoid Build on the main model if you want to author Desktop reports with custom measures.
Grant Build on both for smooth Desktop editing; restrict carefully to protect sensitive data.

safy , Build content should be good, not the modification.

Do you mean - Build on the composite model + Read on the main model should allow Desktop report creation and report measures?
