When I used the Gantt 3.0.12.0, I could sort the tasks in ascending order with the option Sort Axis. But when updating to the Gantt 3.4.2.0, all the tasks will be automatically sorted by the start time, meaning that the task that starts first will show up first. It's not applicable for me because I need the task to comply with the alphabet sorting (available in the 3.0.12.0 version)
This is the Gantt 3.0.12.0: When I chose to sort by Task, all the task will show from A->Z, Example: C => D => E from the left
Gantt 3.0.12.0
This is the Gantt 3.4.2.0: When I chose to sort by Task, all the tasks showed up by the start time. Example for the Parent: 202, the task Name "E" come first, then C => D.
Gant 3.4.2.0
Hi all, Power BI service already down grade from gantt 3.4.2.0 to old version 3.0.12.0 again, and it automatically fix this issue.
Hi @vuht
I tried to reproduce your issue, but I don’t see any problem with task sorting. Maybe try removing the visual from the visualization pane and adding it again? or create a new Gantt chart in a new report and do a test ? I just installed it, and it shows version 3.0.12.0, even though the download location says 3.4.2.0 — maybe they’ve downgraded it.
I have attached the sample I have created for your reference
Hi @kushanNa,
It only happens when using in the Power BI Service, the Power BI Desktop still using 3.0.12.0 and it ok with this version.
Hi @vuht
It’s working for me in the service as well with version 3.4.2.0. Could it be an issue with your data? Maybe some hidden sorting is happening? Try creating a new report, or use the one I’ve attached — publish it and see if you encounter the same issue ?
Hi,
I tried to pull your file, and it's okay, actually.
I found that the problem came when I used the Parent from another table. I connect the sub-table to the main-table via Order No with a 1-to-many Relationship.
The Subtable contains only 2 columns: Order No and Work Center No, then I used to Work Center No in the Parent, and the issue came.
The reason why I have to use the sub-table is just because I made the subtable for the unique value in Work Center No for each Order No (which is not unique in the main table).
When I try to remove the Work Center No from the Sub-table from the parent, the sort is ok, but I need the Work Center No... I just wonder why version 3.0.12.0 is okay for that way, but the 3.4.2.0 isn't.
Please take a look and advise me more.
Okay, now I’m seeing the issue with the relationship tables — yes, this seems to be a bug.
As a temporary workaround, here are the steps I followed:
• Create an OperationDesNew sort order table and sort it in ascending order.
• Since I also encountered a Gantt chart rendering issue with the relationship table column, instead of creating the Gantt chart in Power BI Desktop, I created it directly in the service.
• Use the Reset (green) button at the top to restore the visual to its original state instead of using the Sort button.
Re: undefinedorting Issue in Gantt Chart Visual in... - Microsoft Fabric Community
We re also hving the same issue with this version of the Gantt chart.
I tried your approach , but could not able to resolve it. The sorting is defaulting to Start time. Even though I created the bridge table as you suggested.
Hi @nDevasani
Have you tried selecting sort by index before creating the Gantt Chart? I kind of remember doing that .sorry, I forgot to mention it.
If you can share a sample file with the temporary workaround I suggested (where the sorting isn’t working), I can take a look into it.
I have tried to publish your file, but it has become blank.
Then I tried to do your suggestion with a sort by index and relate to the main table
But the version 3.4.2.0 in Power BI Service still sorts by Start Time for my report
Then, I tried to make your file visible by removing and re-adding the data, it's not blank anymore but become to sort by start time too in the power BI service
Please help to check.
Hi @vuht
You’re moving in the right direction, but you need to create a new page and a new Gantt chart visual in service , only then it will work.
See, it works for me
Hi,
Please advise me more.
I found the difference. Your way is "Ungroup for task", this seems to work for my file too:
But I want to do a "Group Task", and it becomes wrong
I tested a new approach and confirmed a reliable workaround for the Gantt sorting issue:
Open the report in Desktop
Go to Format → Visual → General → Group Tasks = OFF
Apply sorting on the Task field (JOB_ID) using the proper sort column (JOB_ID_SORT)
Save & publish to Power BI Service
Open the report in Edit mode in the Service
Go to Format → Visual → General → Group Tasks = ON
After this sequence, the Gantt visual keeps the correct Task-based sorting and no longer reverts to Start-Time sorting in Power BI Service.
Hi @nDevasani ,
Thank you for your study. I want to try your way, but seemly Power BI service had already down-grade from the version 3.4.2.0 (bug version) to 3.0.12.0 (no bug version)
In the gantt 3.0.12.0 version, you will feel free to sort by task without any special way as i mentioned from the start.
Anyway thank you for your attention and interesting way.
I still dont know why they down-grade but it good for me 😄
Yes, I tried, creating new gantt chart in the service in a ne page. But no luck.
Oh, any chance you could create at least a small portion of dummy data and a PBIX file with the issue, so I can test it out?
Hi @vuht
Your observation is correct. As soon as we select the grouping option, it defaults to sorting by start time, and there’s no way to revert it. I think we might need to wait until they either roll back to the older version or fix it.
Hi @kushanNa ,
Thank you so much for your help. At least I found someone explains
for me.
The new version 3.4.2.0 has some new choices in the grouping of the tasks, I think the issue came from that.
I have droped a comment on the appstore and hope they can see it.
But do you know somewhere I can raise this issue to the writer directly?
Thank you, Ibendlin, I have raised it here Bug in sorting - Gantt 3.4.2.0 from Microsoft - Microsoft Fabric Community
