Bookmark - visible not visible charts

Hi,

Could you please help me with Power BI bookmarks?

I believe it is simple but I have no idea why it is not working.

I want to hide few charts after clicking in Bookmarks.

I have one bookmark called: "not visible" - > one chart is hiden ( I click hide-> update).

Second bookmartk: "visible" -> all charts are visible ( all visible, click -> update)

When I click on either 'visible' and 'not visible' Bookmarks -> both bookmarks are having the same setup as HIDEN one chart.

I have no idea why.

could you help me on that?

Hi @KaroRoza ,

It sounds like a classic Power BI bookmark issue, which is usually caused by how the bookmark saves the state of your visuals. The problem likely stems from the bookmark updating all visuals on the page instead of just the specific one you want to hide or show.

To fix this, you'll need to adjust your bookmarks to only affect the selected visual. First, make the chart you want to control, Incr EBITDA Diff, visible in the Selection Pane. Then, select that specific chart on the canvas or in the Selection Pane. Go to your "visible" bookmark, click the three dots for more options, and make sure to choose "Selected visuals" instead of "All visuals." It is also good practice to uncheck the "Data" option to prevent the bookmark from saving any filters. After configuring these options, click "Update" on the "visible" bookmark.

Next, you will configure the "not visible" state. Without deselecting the chart, simply click the eye icon next to Incr EBITDA Diff in the Selection Pane to hide it. Then, go to your "not visible" bookmark, click the three dots, and ensure the settings are identical: "Selected visuals" should be checked, and "Data" should be unchecked. Click "Update" on this bookmark as well.

This process works because you are explicitly telling each bookmark to only save the show/hide status for the one visual you have selected. The "visible" bookmark now has a single instruction to make that specific chart visible, and the "not visible" bookmark has a single instruction to hide it. When you use the "All visuals" setting, you can inadvertently save conflicting states from other elements on the page, which causes the bookmark to behave unexpectedly. By isolating the change to only the selected visual, you ensure that clicking each bookmark produces a predictable and reliable result.

HI @KaroRoza

In the bookmark properties, did you uncheck Data if you don’t want filters/slicers to be saved? Also make sure “Display” is checked, this controls visibility of visuals.

If you keep Data, then slicers/filters overwrite your bookmark each time.

Hi @KaroRoza ,

Solution 1: Check Bookmark Properties

  1. Right-click on each bookmark and select "Update" or "Data"
  2. Ensure the bookmark settings are correct:
    • Make sure "Display" is checked (this controls visual visibility)
    • Uncheck "Data" if you only want to control visibility, not filters
    • Check "Current page" if you want it to apply only to the current page

Solution 2: Recreate Bookmarks with Proper Sequence

  1. Delete existing bookmarks
  2. Create the "visible" bookmark first:
    • Make all charts visible
    • Create bookmark → name it "visible"
  3. Then create "not visible" bookmark:
    • Hide the specific charts you want hidden

Create bookmark → name it "not visible"

Solution 3: Use Selection Pane Method

  1. Open Selection Pane (View → Selection Pane)
  2. For "not visible" state:
    • Click the eye icon next to charts you want to hide
    • Create bookmark while charts are hidden
  3. For "visible" state:
    • Make all charts visible in Selection Pane
    • Create bookmark

Please follow this procedure step by step and it will give you correct views.

Best regards,

Thanks a lot!

I had wrong setting of Bookmarks. It works when I have: NO - Data, YES - All visuals.

Could you please also explain what does it mean?

All Visuals are confusing, as I suppose than if I choose YES - Selected Visuals -> means selected visuals will be visible....

KaroRoza_0-1757334446533.png

'All visuals' refers to the bookmark applies its saved state (visibility, spotlight, focus mode, etc.) to every visual on the page. while 'Selected visuals' means the bookmark applies only to the visuals you had selected when creating/updating the bookmark.

You can see the video towards the end.

Hi @KaroRoza ,

Data (Currently selected - highlighted in yellow)

  • What it does: Captures and restores filters, slicers, and data selections
  • When to use: When you want to save specific filter states (e.g., "Show only 2023 data")
  • Your case: You had this ON, but you only wanted to control visibility, not data filters

Display (Checked ✓)

  • What it does: Captures and restores visual visibility, size, and position
  • When to use: When you want to show/hide visuals or change their layout
  • Your case: This is what you actually needed for hiding charts

Current page (Checked ✓)

  • What it does: Applies bookmark only to the current page
  • When to use: When you don't want the bookmark to affect other pages
  • Your case: Good to have this checked for page-specific visibility

All visuals vs Selected visuals

All visuals (Currently selected - highlighted in yellow)

  • What it means: The bookmark will capture the state of every visual on the page
  • Effect: When you click the bookmark, it affects all visuals regardless of what's currently selected
  • Best for: Page-wide changes (show/hide multiple charts)

Selected visuals

  • What it means: The bookmark only captures the state of visuals you had selected when creating the bookmark
  • Effect: Only affects the specific visuals you pre-selected
  • Best for: Controlling specific charts while leaving others unchanged
