I have been doing some testing of a Power Bi report and now have it in a semi finalised state. Therefore I'd like to rename it from the development name I have been using to something more appropriate. In the workspace I notice that there is the report and a semantic model with the same name.
I want to make sure that when I rename things that no exisitng functionality will break. So what is the best way to do this? And do I need to rename the report and the semantic model so they match? FInally is there anything else I need to rename/update for things to keep working as they are?

Hi @PowerAutomater ,
You can refer the following links to rename the report:

Renaming a report should not cause any technical issues with the underlying data model or how the report functions, it's mainly a matter of ensuring that users and any manual references are aware of the name change. If the report is part of a published app, users who have access to the app will see the new report name automatically after you update the app with the new report name. And if there is any bookmark, links or technical documentation that refer to the report by name may need to be updated to reflect the new name...

To rename a Power BI report and its dataset without breaking functionality, start by checking dependencies like linked dashboards, other reports, and shared links. Rename the report in the workspace using the ellipsis menu and give it a meaningful name. If the dataset is exclusive to the report, rename it for consistency. Update any shared or embedded links to reflect the changes. Test the renamed report to ensure it connects properly to the dataset and all related dashboards still work.
Example:
To rename a Power BI report and its dataset for a "Products" example, start by checking for dependencies like dashboards showing product data, other reports referencing the product dataset, or shared links and embedded reports. For instance, if your current report is named “Products_Dev_Report” and the dataset is “Products_Dev_Model”, you can rename them to “Product_Sales_Report” and “Product_Sales_Model” for clarity.
Go to your Power BI workspace, locate “Products_Dev_Report”, click the ellipsis, and choose Rename. Rename it to “Product_Sales_Report”. Similarly, find the dataset “Products_Dev_Model” and rename it to “Product_Sales_Model”. Update any shared links or embedded reports to use the new report name.
Finally, test the report to ensure it connects to the renamed dataset and verify that all dashboards or linked visuals still function correctly.

Based on my experience, renaming a semantic model does not impact a regular report. However, for thin reports and those connected to the semantic model via direct query, they will need to be redirected to the updated semantic model.

Ok, what if I just rename the report in the workspace but not the semantic model, will that cause any issues?
