Bar chart format workaround?

Hi all -

Looking for a solution to format a horizontal bar chart visualization that's pulling from a multiple-choice survey question that has the values in multiple columns in my source spreadsheet. Basically, I can get the data all on the bar chart, but it is clustered super close together, despite there being tons of vertical space. See attached. I am using the clustered bar chart option, even though it's technically just a single cluster--but I don't think there's another option that will do what I want to do (display values across multiple variables on a single scale). The Funnel does, I suppose, but I want it to look like a bar chart (so left aligned).

For the fields, I have all of the individual variables (each a separate column in Excel) in the value fields; nothing in Axis or legend. I've tried editing the category width, maximum size, and inner padding, but the only one that changes it at all is the inner padding - and only VERY minimally then. Any suggestions?

  • DLB13 yes these all become implicit measures and that is your problem. Your data is not in the shape to achieve the result you are looking for and looking at it first hand, it is not a scalable model and the right way to do it.

You should share a sample pbix file using one drive/google drive and remove sensitive information before sharing. Basically, you need to unpivot your data to make it work.

  • DLB13 whatever column put added on the legend, you should move it to x-axis.

Thanks so much for your quick response! I have no column listed in the legend field nor do I have anything listed in the axis field, so I don't think that's it?

  • DLB13 what is it? Measures? If yes then there is a problem with your model

Those are just the names of the column. I did not input them into the legend field. Here is exactly what the field pane looks like. No measures.

Ah! The unpivoting was the trick I needed. Problem now solved - thank you so much!
