Hi,
I am trying to make a filled map in using the Azure map visual. I want to show the Dutch municipalities. I am trying to do this using location field in the visual. For a lot of municipalities the visual gets the borders correct, however it does leave some gaps. I have tried concatenating the province, country etc. I have tried categorizing the data in all kinds of ways. The category that seems to work best is state/province weirdly. I have also categorized the fields i use to concatenate, such as province or country. Nothing truly works.
Now i know i can use a geojson as a reference layer, and i do use it for static data. However i need it to be interactive and dynamic.
In my municipality_sample.pbix: You can see in there that the municipality of Utrecht is shown as the province Utrecht. That must be because i categorized this field as state/province, however there is no municipality category. Why isn't there a municipality data category? Seems like an obvious one.
Other municipalities are filled in different countries, even though i have concatenated the country name. Some are just not shown at all. There are a lot of ambiguities in geospatial names, and the visual doesn't handle them well.
The location field seems to be extremly limited in its usefullnes and very tedious to work with. I always struggle with it once i need some detailed location or area. Therefore it would be nice if there was an option to relate polygon data to my dimension tables, so we could make custom filled area's. Just like we can with point data using the latitude and longitude. Or maybe ask the user for more contextual information like the arcgis visual does by asking in which country the locations are?
My question is, does anyone know if it is possible to get this working 100%? I can't seem to get it to work for dutch municipalities.
I would also like it to work for neighbourhoods (wijken en buurten), as i need to analyse data at that granularity as well. I am assuming that such a filled map is too detailed. Does anyone know a good alternative, or is this just a limitation of Power BI?
Thank you!

Hi @stacker26 ,
For visualizing data at the neighborhood level, the granularity required may indeed exceed the capabilities of azure map visual in Power BI.
// Or maybe ask the user for more contextual information like the arcgis visual does by asking in which country the locations are?
Arcgis map is also available in PowerBI and this visual offers more advanced geographic detailing and might better support the level of granularity you need. Maybe give it a try.

ArcGIS maps works well for municipalities. Unfortunately neighbourhoods are not really recognized. Perhaps even worse than Azure maps. I suppose creating a (paid) custom reference layer for esri ArcGIS is the only viable solution.
