Azure Maps: Selection tool not filtering when using data-bound reference layer
Hi,
I’m experiencing an issue with the selection tools in the Azure Maps visual in Power BI and have not been able to find a solution or clear documentation explaining this behavior.
I am using the Azure Maps visual with a data-bound reference layer
The selection tool (circle/rectangle/lasso) is enabled in the visual settings
The report contains KPIs and other visuals that are correctly cross-filtered by the map
When using the selection tool (e.g. circle or range selection), I expect:
Areas within the selection to be selected/highlighted on the map
Other visuals (KPIs) to update based on the selected areas
Actual behavior
Using the selection tool does nothing:
No areas are selected or highlighted
KPIs and other visuals are not filtered
However:
Single-click selection (and multi-select using ctrl) on individual areas work as expected
The selected area is highlighted
KPIs update correctly
What I’ve already checked
Tenant setting “Allow Microsoft subprocessors to process data” is enabled
- The preview feature "On-object interaction" is turned on
- Tried changing the map style (e.g. from grayscale to road), but it had no effect
Question
Is this a known limitation of Azure Maps when using a data-bound reference layer?
Or is there a specific configuration or requirement needed for selection tools to work that I am missing?
Any clarification on whether this is by design, a limitation, or a misconfiguration would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
Hi MK_2025 -Currently, Microsoft doesn’t support area selection on polygons. You could submit feedback in the Power BI Ideas forum Link Below

Note: Azure Maps selection tools work for points, not data-bound polygons or reference layers.
Hope this helps.
