Is there a way to make these fields appear on the area chart itself, in addition to/instead of, legend?
If you mean to place the legen inside the plotting chart, to save space, the answer is no.
But maybe you can put textboxes behind the chart, the charting area is by default transparent, but this solution depends on your data
Yes, I meant putting the legend inside the chart itself. One way to do it is use text boxes, but since my report is interactive, it won't be very convinient since the chart will keep changing its shape. I was hoping for something like this(the chart below is from Tableau)

It is not possible to put legend labels inside the charts, you can submit an idea about this issue in this forum:https://ideas.powerbi.com/forums/265200.
Currently, you can only work around this issue by using textbox.

i have to admit that i have no idea, what you mean, can you please provide a little more information than just the arrow, maybe you can scribble your wanted chart.
