Application not opening

When launching Power BI desktop on a windows 10 virtual machine an error message pops up saying Something went wrong. A tasks exceptions were not observed either by waiting on the task or accessing its exceptions property. As a result the unoberserved exception was rethrown by the finalizer thread.

I have tried unistalling and reinstalling the program, making sure windows is up todate.

Any thoughts on why this could be happing?

I did update the version from 2.137.751.0 to 2.140.1577.0

  • Hi susanschomig  - That error message typically indicates an issue with the .NET framework, system permissions, or corrupted Power BI files.

can you cross check the vm configuration at least 8GB

Try running Power BI as an administrator>>Right-click on the Power BI shortcut>>Select Run as administrator.

check if there are any power bi related error logs from event viewer.

    Delete Power BI-related folders:

    C:\Users\<YourUser>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Power BI Desktop

    C:\Users\<YourUser>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Power BI Desktop

You can download an older version here->Previous monthly updates to Power BI Desktop and the Power BI service

    Hope this helps.

  • I did just try reverting to an older version 2.137.751.0 and getting a new error non-empty assertion failure: defaultsourcequeryculture

I have also verified that the VMs are configured to have 8gb
