In my report there are 2 tables in a page (pls refer picture below)
I had aligned the columns in Matrix table 1 and 2 and moved table 2 under table1 such that just the numbers are visible under table 1. Then formatted table2 (send backward and send to back) so that the column headers are hidden.
Everytime there is a change in a slicer selection, the alignment goes awry. Also, tried toggling lock aspect on/off and still the alignments do not stay put.
Please can someone share you expertise and assist with ensuring that the alignment stays put.

Based on your screenshot, unless there's blank value, it supposes to keep same width since both matrix have same column group. But anyway, it's not possible to fix the width of a matrix. You may have both matrix "show items with no data"

Why not create a relationship between the tables and use all values in 1 matrix?

Both tables point to the same source. Table 1 shows the numbers as a calculated percentage for the current month and table 2 shows the Year-to-date sum.
