Add custom color to PowerBI

Hi,

I'm looking for a way to add a custom color to my powerBI report. I don't want it as a part of my palette, just a specific color. I use this to indicate good or bad results. In the current situation, I have to add the hex value within the 'More colors...' option (within visualizations -> visual -> columns -> color). When I close the file and re-open it, the custom added color dissapeared from my 'recent colors, list. When I want to use this color again, I have to manually input the hex value(s).

    Hi GijsBI ,

    Based on the description, power bi does not support this feature currently based on the knowledge.

    Try to raise a new idea and add the comments there to make this feature coming sooner.

    Home (microsoft.com)

    But, for the visual custom color, try to create a custom theme json file. Save the json file with an name.

    {
      "name": "Custom Theme",
      "dataColors": ["#FF5733", "#33FF57", "#3357FF"]
    }

    Then, try click on view tab, select Browse for theme and choose the theme file.

    Best Regards,

    Wisdom Wu

      Hi Wu,

      Thank you for your reaction. I'm using a company broad theme so I'm not allowed to manually add colors to it. That's why I was hoping to find a way to avoid this.

  • Hi GijsBI ,

    Please be specific of where you want to add the custom color. Colors in Power BI be customized and conditionally formatted for most objects including visual elements and shapes.

  • Hi GijsBI ,

    I presume you are choosing a custom color within conditional formatting? I just did a quick test  and it seems to work fine for me:

    1.  Added data/measures to a visual (table)
    2. set conditional formatting

    3. In the color dropdown I selected More colors... and then picked a custom color not on the palette (either by hand selecting, or putting in a hex code)
    4. Saved and closed the conditional formatting
    5. saved and closed the report
    6. Reopened the report

    The color stayed the same for me in the conditional formatting, although it did disappear from the recently used colors on the color picker.

    If these are the steps you took, I am afraid I do not know what the issue is.

    If you did something differently please try the above steps, or elaborate on what steps you took so we can troubleshoot!

    Best regards,

    Daniel

  • Hi  danextian,

    Thanks for your quick response. I mean the color within the visualizations -> visual -> columns -> color section.

      I see. Unfortunately, newly applied colors are not saved and are reset after opening a pbix so I usually saved the hexadecimal values somewhere (a draft email) so I can get back to it or go to the visual applied a customer color to and copy the hex value.

        Oh okay, I hoped it would be somehow possible. Thanks for your investigation.

  • Hi dk_dk,

    Thank you for trying to replicate my issue. I mean the color within the visualizations -> visual -> columns -> color section. When I choose a custom color in here, apply it, save, and re-open the file, the custom color is not within my recent colors. I'm looking for a way to add this custom color without having to edit the pallette, so that I don't have to manually add this color to my report every time I need it.
