Service Principal - admin portal setting fabric api

Hi,

I need to connect to my fabric data warehouse in dbt cloud.

As recommended, tried to set up a service principal in azure portal and add it to my fabric workspace.

There is one weird thing in between that I could not figure out!!

A prerequisite to use service principal is to use the admin portal to allow Service Principal to use the fabric APIs (something like this  Microsoft Entra authentication in Synapse Data Warehouse - Microsoft Fabric | Microsoft Learn). Actually the account we used to create fabric capacity, has NO such settings. It does not look like at all the way it looks like here (About tenant settings - Microsoft Fabric | Microsoft Learn). What we see is like this (in german)

At the end of day, we tried to skip this stage, as we thought this permission is given by default. But in dbt cloud we cannot connect to Fabric DWH. And I assume the problem comes from not being able to edit the setting on Fabric API.

Why we cannot see the proper Admin Portal (even using the account which created fabric capacity)?

Thanks in advance,

Jalal

Hi @Jalalmn,

For your scenario, it means your account does not have premissions to view and manage tenant setting, currently this account can only view the fabric capacity related settings.

You can contact to the admin to modify the tenant setting -> 'service principal' usage related settings.

Notice:

It not means all the rest API support to use service principal authorization.

I'd like to suggest you check on the official document about detail fabric rest API page to confirm if the current rest API allow you to use service principal.

Actually not.

The problem is that we have no access to Fabric admin 🙂

I mean, we try to create a fabric account using our admin email address, but everytime it fails during the step of setting environment and returns a long session error.
If we could create the fabric using our admin address, we would not create the fabric capacity using staff email address.

And we don't know yet how to solve it

Perhaps this is a setting which is controlled by the Fabric administrator, not Capacity administrator. So you would need to talk with the Fabric administrator in your organization.
