We can’t predict the future but we can look back at historical data to spot trends and inform our decisions – in this case, what train should I board to avoid being late!
This #PowerBI report uses official data from the National Rail Enquiries – the same data used in departure boards at UK train stations or phone apps.
Due to data volumes, data from Jan'22 to Jun'22 was used to evaluate train performance (on-time arrival) in the UK's West Coast Mainline; this is limited to the main stations along the line, for a representative full week in each month, during peak hours (06:00-09:00 and 16:00-18:00).
For the data used, we can see that 50% of trains didn’t make it on time, so this report can actually be useful to pick a train with high likelihood of getting you from A to B without being late!
Data also shows that the North is more severely affected by delays – Warrington, Lancaster, Carlisle or Wigan will all, on average, see trains delayed more than 60% of the time for peak hours during the week.
