The lattice multiplication method is an alternative to long multiplication and can be used to multiply numbers of any length. This report consists of a step-by-step tutorial of the lattice method with two specific computation examples (tooltips in steps 3 and 4) that are activated upon hovering one's mouse over the specified text. After the tutorial, there is an interactive section that allows the user to input two numbers that are up to 3 digits in length, try the lattice method themselves with a paper and pen, and then check their answers on the next page of the report.
The lattice multiplication method is algorithmically equivalent to long multiplication. However, some students may like the lattice method more since it requires less active attention to place values when carrying out the actual multiplication process. Students may experience success with multiplication using a variety of different methods -- everyone is different!
