Reflecting on Dashboard Design: What Makes a Good Dashboard?
I recently created a new dashboard to reflect on the principles of effective dashboard design and demonstrate the difference between good and bad practices.
In my earlier attempts, I made the mistake of cramming too much information and too many details onto the dashboard, which you can view the dashboards I posted before. This made it difficult for the audience to identify useful insights at first glance. Additionally, the presence of numerous disordered graphs left viewers unsure of where to focus their attention or where to start.
With this new dashboard, I have incorporated essential design principles to address those issues and create a more user-friendly experience:
Clarity and Simplicity: Instead of overwhelming the audience with all the information at once, I focused on including only the necessary data, ensuring the audience knows where to focus their attention.
Prioritized Information: Key metrics are prominently displayed in the first row, providing a quick and clear overview for viewers. The layout flows logically, guiding users through the data effectively.
Consistency: A cohesive color scheme and well-organized layout ensure the dashboard is visually appealing and easy to navigate.
Contextual Information: Features like average lines and scales help users quickly assess performance or satisfaction levels at a glance.
Interactivity: Interactive visualizations make the data engaging and easy to interpret. The inclusion of slicers, such as those for education level and programming languages, allows users to explore the data in depth and tailor insights to their needs.
This reflection and redesign process has been an invaluable learning experience. I would love to hear your thoughts and feedback! What principles do you prioritize when designing dashboards?
