Student requesting temporary Fabric capacity support for non-commercial project
- 3 months ago
Hi Alimert
Currently, Microsoft Fabric does not offer a dedicated student license or educational credit program beyond the standard 60‑day trial. However Some tenants can request an increase to F64 (64 CUs) during the trial but it exclude certain feature like Trusted workspace access, AI services, Copilot. Check if your trial can be upgraded to F64 in the Admin Portal → Capacity Settings
Microsoft offers Azure for Students credits (usually $100 free credit annually).
While Fabric is not directly listed, credits can be applied to Azure services that integrate with Fabric workloads (e.g., storage, compute).
Check eligibility with a verified academic email.Microsoft Fabric itself doesn’t have a dedicated student license, but it runs on top of Azure capacity. With Azure for Students credits, you can:
Pay for Azure services that integrate with Fabric (like storage, compute, or databases).
Potentially offset costs if your institution has Fabric capacity tied to Azure subscriptions.
Even if Fabric trial capacity expires, you can still use Azure credits to support related workloads (data prep, storage, ML experiments) and then connect them back into Fabric
Microsoft occasionally provides capacity grants for academic research projects if it aligns with academic research initiatives. Students typically need to apply via faculty sponsorship or through Microsoft Research collaborations.
You can also Use free/open‑source platforms (like Apache Spark locally, Jupyter Notebooks, or Python libraries) to perform heavy computation, then push the results into Fabric for visualization, reporting, or sharing.
Also you can do one thing like Instead of uploading and processing very large files (like multi‑GB CSVs or complex Spark jobs), you use smaller sample versions of your own data. Trial capacity (F4 or F64) has limited compute units. Smaller workloads finish faster, consume fewer resources, and avoid hitting trial limits.
I hope this helps to clarify the options available to you. If you found this useful, a Kudo would mean a lot it keeps me motivated to share more insights with the community.
Thank You
Sunita

You can look into Microsoft for Startups, which is Microsoft's official program for entrepreneurs. The credits you get are not Fabric specific, however they can be used to pay Fabric capacity.
What is Microsoft for Startups? | Microsoft Learn
However, points to note - it is not available for:
- students (pure learning scenarios)
- hobby projects
- consultancies / agencies
Microsoft explicitly requires:
- a real startup building a product
So, if you think one of yuor reserach projects can be aimed as a commercial product, then you could explore that option!
