Hello.
I tried to create a dashboard in Fabric by the instructions in the "Create a real-time dashboard" section of this page:
However, I got the following error message:
"Failed to fetch data source schema. Unknown error"
Solved! Go to Solution.
Hi @JH-Fabrico ,
Thank you for the update. It’s great to hear that you were able to create a real-time dashboard successfully.
I followed the same steps using the same dataset and was able to add a tile from a queryset successfully without encountering any errors. I have attached screenshots for reference.
1. Add a tile
2. KQL Query
3. Run the Query
4. After Applying changes
Since the issue persists on your end, please try the following:
If the issue continues, could you share the exact query you used and any additional error details. This will help us investigate further.
Hope this helps.

Hi @JH-Fabrico ,
Thank you for reaching out regarding the error you encountered while creating a real-time dashboard.
The error message "Failed to fetch data source schema. Unknown error" generally points to issues with the data source or configuration. Please consider the following:
Ensure that the connection to your data source is properly configured. Double-check the credentials and connection string to ensure they are correct, and confirm that the data source is accessible.
Could you also confirm if you're using the same sample data source provided in the documentation or a different one?
Confirm that you have the necessary permissions to access the schema of the data source. If you're working in a shared environment or with a managed dataset, please ensure that you have the appropriate access rights.
Make sure the schema of the data source is correctly defined and available for use in your workspace. If you're using a real-time data source, confirm that it supports the necessary streaming capabilities.
For users to create real-time dashboards, it’s important that the relevant settings are enabled at the tenant level. Please ensure the following:
The real-time data feature must be enabled in your tenant settings. If you have admin access, navigate to the Admin Portal and enable the Users can create Real-Time Dashboards.
Please refer these links for additional details:
Create a Real-Time Dashboard - Microsoft Fabric | Microsoft Learn
Real-Time Dashboard permissions (preview) - Microsoft Fabric | Microsoft Learn
Once these settings are correctly configured, you should be able to create and manage real-time dashboards.
If you continue to experience issues, please share any additional details or error logs to assist further in troubleshooting.
If this post helps, then please consider Accept it as the solution to help the other members find it more quickly and a kudos would be appreciated.

I would like to add that I was able to create a real-time dashboard by following the instructions in the "Create a new dashboard" section of this piece of documentation: Create a Real-Time Dashboard - Microsoft Fabric | Microsoft Learn
However, when I followed the instructions in the "Add tile from a queryset" section of the Create a Real-Time Dashboard - Microsoft Fabric | Microsoft Learn documenation, I got the same error message I did when I followed the instructions in the exercise foun on this page: mslearn-fabric
The fact that I was able to create a working real-time dashboard suggests that I have the necessary permissions to the data source.
Thank you again for all your help.

Hello.
Thank you for your response.
Regarding my data source, yes, I am using the same sample data source provided in the documentation.
As far as my data source connection configuration, to the best of my knowledge it is configured properly , as I followed the instructions in the documentation and did not obtain an error message when establishing the connection to the data source. Also, I am able to query the data source using KQL.
With regards to having the necessary authorizations, to the best of my knowledge I do have them. I am using the Trial subscription of Frabric and, as mentioned, I am able to query the data using KQL.
As far as the schema of the data source is concerned, to the best of my knowledge it is correctly defined and available for use in your workspace. As mentioned, I am using the same sample data source provided in the documentation and, using the workspace I created following the instructions in the documentation, I am able to query the data using KQL.
Regarding ensuring that I can create real-time dashboards, unfortunately, I am not the tenant admin, so I don't have access to the admin portal. Doesn't the free trial Fabric subscriton automatically allow for the creation of real-time dashboards?
I have the same issue, and I cant find this setting in the admin portal under tenant settings
