Is there a way to copy a dataset in a Fabric workspace to a Power BI workspace?
Solved! Go to Solution.
I would actually like the answer for both Power BI Desktop and Power BI on Microsoft 365, which I assume is Fabric now. Presently I have a Power BI workspace on 365 which I can access even when Fabric is offline. I would like to copy a dataset that I have in a Fabric workspace to this Power BI workspace. Please let me know if you need further explanation.
Hi @mwjones61 ,
Yes, we can copy a dataset in a Fabric workspace to a Power BI workspace.
Inorder to get dataset from Fabric workspace to Fabric Power BI Service -
Step 1: Open Power BI workspace in Fabric and click on published dataset
We can find all our Fabric Datasets in Power BI Workspace -
Inorder to get dataset from Fabric workspace to Power BI Desktop we have 2 options -
Note: User should be logged in using same account (both in Fabric and Power BI Desktop)
Option 1:
Option 2:
We can find all our Fabric Datasets in Power BI Desktop -
Please feel free to refer this documentation - Link
Hope this is helpful
Thank you for your response. I don't have Power BI Desktop installed yet, so I will address the first option. In that first option you are not actually copying the dataset that is in Fabric to the Power BI workkspace, so if the Fabric capacity were paused, you would not have access to it. I can create a report in the Power BI workspace, but that report is still referencing the dataset that is in the Fabric workspace. Is that correct?
Hi @mwjones61 ,
I have reached the internal team for help on this. I can confirm you once I hear from them.
Appreciate your patience.
Hi @mwjones61 ,
Yes you are correct.
Inorder to summarise :
1) If a workspace is assigned to a Fabric Capacity and that capacity is off, nothing in the workspace will work.
2) If you want to use a workspace when the Fabric Capacity is off, the solution is to unassign the workspace from the capacity and switch it back to ppu or pro mode.
3) If that workspace has Any "Fabric items" you cannot do step - (2)
4) Items that comes under Fabric are: DWH, lake House, the associated default dataset, any custom direct lake datasets, and others.
5) Items that comes under Non Fabric are: import and dq datasets, reports, dashboards, metrics.
Final Conclusion if the customer is not committed to having their Fabric Capacity on all the time (they want to access items) and might at some point want to access items via per user licensing (pro/ppu), they should keep Power bi datasets and reports in a separate workspace.

Thanks! That answers my question.
Hi @mwjones61 ,
Glad to know that your issue got resolved.
Please continue using Fabric Community for help regarding your issues.
Hi @mwjones61 - Thanks for using Fabric Community.
Can you please let us know what you are trying to acheive?
Are you referring to Power BI desktop here or Fabric Power BI?
As I understand you would like to check whether we can copy a dataset present inside Fabric Workspace (Lakehouse or Datawarehouse) to Power BI Desktop. Can you please confirm on this?
Thank you
