How to use RLS in "Publish to Web" ?

Hi,

I have created a dashboard using the Power BI Pro version, and I need to share the report with free users via Publish to web. However, this feature does not support Row-Level Security (RLS). How can I share the report with Publish to web while still maintaining RLS?

Unfortunately, it's not possible to use Row-Level Security (RLS) with the Publish to web feature in Power BI. Publish to web generates a public URL for your report, allowing anyone with the link to access it, but it removes all security settings, including RLS, to ensure that all viewers see the same data.

If you need to share your report with external users while still maintaining RLS, you'll need to consider alternative options. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Power BI Embedded: You can embed your Power BI report into a custom web application using Power BI Embedded. This requires development effort to create the web application and integrate the embedded report, but it allows you to maintain RLS and control access to the report through your application.

  2. Power BI Apps: You can publish your report to a Power BI app workspace and then share the app with specific users or groups. Power BI apps support RLS, so you can restrict access to data based on user roles or permissions. Note that users will need a Power BI Pro license to access the app.

  3. Power BI Premium: If you have Power BI Premium capacity, you can publish your report to a workspace in a Premium capacity. With Premium, you can use app workspaces with RLS and share reports with free users without requiring them to have a Pro license.

  4. Exporting Data: If your report contains sensitive data and you're concerned about sharing it publicly, consider exporting summarized data to a format like Excel or PDF and sharing it with external users through secure channels like email or a secure file-sharing platform.
