How to create new column by extracting first two letter or first two number from another column

I have a  column Material . this column combined text and number value like below

Item No           material 

 1                      70.Y808

 1                      V0P8MC

 1                      10.0000

 1                      40.9JWH

I want to create new column name category this  extract first two letter from the material column

output like 

Item No           material         Categoey 

 1                      70.Y808            70

 1                      V0P8MC           V0

 1                      10.0000            10

 1                      40.9JWH           40

i have tired few of measure i am getting some  column blank .
