Displaying icon based on text value in a column

Hello guys,

I have a column which stores file status as a text string called Status. I want to display only an icon based on this field value. I tried conditional formatting, but for values it doesn't show me the option of picking an icon. 

I am a complete newbie, but my idea was to add a numeric column Status value, based on the text value, and then in conditional formatting format style based on rules instead of values. How do I create that column, so that for example for text value X and Y it stores 1, and for Z it stores 2, for A it stores 3 etc.?

I should add that I am using live connection, so I can't just add a column, I think it needs to be a measure.

@Anonymous , You can create an unichar measure and use that as a measure
