Dax Studio - cannot change connection

I have just installed DAX Studio and connected to a Power BI Desktop.

I wish to use a DIFFERENT power BI project but DAX Studio does not seem to allow changeing the connection.

I have tried closeing and reopenning Dax Studio.

I have searched the documentation on the Dax Studio web site.

The DAX Studio connection is intended to connect to OPEN Power BI Desktop projects.

Close Dax Studio.

Close any open PBI projects.

Open the PBI project you want to connet to.

Launch Dax Studio.

Connect to the project listed in the connect dialog.

You can validate that Dax Studio is connecting to the project you want by changing the name of the project and re-connecting from Dax Studio.

Hope this helps - Doug

I see you. From the past week on I'm not able to change credentials when connecting to a semantic model on the Power BI Service. Something has changed.

Hi @ES335Cherry ,
Thanks for reaching out to the Microsoft fabric community forum.

To resolve the issue where DAX Studio does not allow changing the connection to a different Power BI Desktop file, try these steps:

Properly Change Connection in DAX Studio

  1. Close the Current Power BI File
    • Save and close the Power BI Desktop file that is currently connected to DAX Studio.
  2. Open the New Power BI File
    • Launch Power BI Desktop and open the new .pbix file that you want to connect to.
  3. Open (or Restart) DAX Studio
    • If DAX Studio is already open, close it and reopen it.
    • When it starts, you’ll see a connection window.
  4. In the Connection Window:
    • Under Data Source, select Power BI / PBIx.
    • In the dropdown, DAX Studio will list all running instances of Power BI Desktop.
    • Select the new Power BI file that you just opened.
  5. Click Connect.

DAX Studio can only connect to Power BI files that are currently running in Power BI Desktop.

  • You cannot switch connections from inside an open DAX Studio session without restarting it.
  • If multiple Power BI files are open, DAX Studio will list them by name in the connection dropdown.

If Connection Window Does Not Appear Automatically:

  • Go to File - Connect from the DAX Studio menu.
  • Or simply restart DAX Studio to trigger the connection prompt.
