My approach for this final challenge was driven by three core objectives:
1. Designing for Everyone, Not for Experts
The intended audience—curious travelers, lifestyle journalists, and everyday people—was my primary focus. I believe that data stories should be accessible to all, not just statisticians. This principle guided every design choice:
A Vertical, Web-Style Layout: To create an intuitive, scannable reading experience that feels natural on any device.
Guided Interaction: Interactions are kept simple and are explicitly explained, ensuring no user feels lost.
Narrative Introductions: Each section begins with a clear text explaining what the user is about to see, turning the report into a guided tour.
2. Crafting a Narrative Journey
I wanted the exploration of these products to feel like a journey of discovery.
Relatable Metrics: First, I converted abstract production and consumption data into tangible units that everyone understands: cups of coffee and bars of chocolate.
A Revealing Storyline: The report starts with a world map showing the biggest total consumers, then pivots to a per-capita view. This immediately reveals a deeper insight: the largest consumers aren't necessarily the most passionate.
Spotting the Trends: Finally, growth curves show which products are the most "trendy." The data analysis intentionally begins in 2010, the year the FAO changed its calculation methodology, ensuring the trend analysis is built on a consistent and credible foundation.
3. Building with Speed and Precision
This entire report was assembled in a 20-minute live build. This intense constraint required a focus on preparation and efficiency, relying on pre-built assets, including custom HTML and SVG elements, to create a polished and insightful story under pressure.
