🌍 Climate Change – A DataStory about CO2 🌍
Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is one of the most well-known greenhouse gases, released primarily through burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial activities. While it occurs naturally in the atmosphere, human activities have increased its concentration to over 420 parts per million (ppm)—a level not seen in at least 800,000 years. Greenhouse gases, including CO₂, methane (CH₄), and nitrous oxide (N₂O), trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere, causing global temperatures to rise at an alarming rate.
The consequences of this warming are already visible. Since 1900, global temperatures have increased by approximately 1.2°C, accelerating the melting of polar ice caps. The Arctic ice extent is shrinking at a rate of 13% per decade, and Greenland alone is losing about 270 billion tons of ice per year. As a result, sea levels have risen by over 20 cm since 1880, threatening coastal cities and island nations. Additionally, oceans absorb about 30% of CO₂ emissions, leading to acidification, which disrupts marine ecosystems, endangers coral reefs, and affects global fisheries.
The data is clear: climate change is not a distant threat—it’s happening now. Understanding these processes is key to taking action. In this report, we break down the science, the trends, and what can be done to mitigate these impacts.
