Week 3 - NBA is Family

I was excited to learn that the Week 3 theme of the Power BI World Championship is sports, as I had already been brainstorming a dashboard concept inspired by Kevin O’Connor’s podcast on the success of second-generation NBA players (Podcast Link).

Although one week wasn’t enough to gather all the data needed to recreate Tom Haberstroh’s analysis of second-generation NBA players based on their draft positions, I was able to access detailed advanced NBA analytics, including win shares, to assess player impact.

The dataset is incredibly rich, and I’ve only scratched the surface in my analysis. However, it does not include player relationships or championship history—so I manually compiled this information from various sources (listed below) and integrated it into my dataset. By combining these sources, I created a data model to support my visualizations.

Accessibility Features

  • The dashboard is color-blind friendly, ensuring readability for all types of color blindness.
  • Alt text has been added to all visuals to enhance accessibility for screen readers.

Design Choices

  • The dashboard theme incorporates NBA’s blue and pink base colors, complemented by orange (representing basketball).
  • Power BI’s accessible theme palette was used for graphs to enhance readability.
  • In addition to Power BI’s basic visuals, I used Graphtomate pictographs for better storytelling.
  • Images are sourced from Freepik and NBA resources.

Dashboard Structure

    • This section highlights the presence of family ties in the NBA, including brothers, fathers, and sons.

  2. Family as a Competitive Advantage

    • This section examines how second-generation players and those with NBA siblings tend to have an advantage compared to those without family ties in the league.

  3. The Best of the Bunch

    • A look at NBA families as a group—who has played the most seasons, accumulated the highest combined win shares, or won the most championships.Family-Oriented Teams
