Week 2 - Discover Switzerland

Discover Switzerland

I am happy to finally submit my entry for this week's Power BI DataViz challenge.

My report is all about traveling to Switzerland (where I come from) and is called "Discover Switzerland."

Famous in Switzerland

On this page, I show you how common stereotypes about Swiss people may or may not be true, featuring mountains, Swiss cheese, and chocolate. This was quite a labor-intensive page. The mountain line chart, which depicts the silhouette of Switzerland’s most iconic peaks, took a lot of time as I had to carefully place the data points on a grid over the image.

Explore

For this page, I used the official map of Switzerland’s states (called cantons) and researched the top attractions. For each canton, I collected descriptions of the top five attractions. If you plan to travel to Switzerland, this is a useful tool to discover what’s nearby or what might interest you. With a collection of all cantonal coat of arms, the visualization has a very official look. By hovering over the attractions, you can see all the details and their locations on the map.

Visit

On the "Visit" page, you’ll find insightful statistics on the busiest travel months, the most frequent visitors by country, and some interesting key figures showing the measurable benefits of traveling to or living in Switzerland.

Have fun

Whether you're a traveler, a data enthusiast, or just curious about Switzerland, this report gives you an interactive and visually engaging way to explore the country. Let me know, if you need any details about the development and visuals.

Some final thoughts...

  • What surprised me the most during the creation process was that, apart from the HTML5 visual, which I used to create custom SVGs, I exclusively relied on Power BI core visuals (or visuals in preview). This demonstrates how powerful the built-in visuals can be when they are carefully refined.
  • I noticed that I needed a moment to find everything again in Power BI and to adjust some of the more hidden settings. Since I don’t work with Power BI every single day and am often busy with client projects, it takes a moment to refresh my knowledge of Power BI’s unique features.
  • Outside of work, this was one of the most time-consuming projects I've done in Power BI reporting. But it was a great topic and an exciting challenge. I'm really looking forward to discovering the other submissions!
