Legislation Status of Same-Sex Marriage:
This Power BI report presents a visual analysis of same-sex marriage legislation across different countries. Using two datasets, it highlights the legislative status over time and provides insights into the global trends.
Custom Shape Map for Enhanced Visualization
To improve geographic representation, I developed a custom topology for the Shape Map. Unlike the default Filled Map, this version allows for background removal and greater customization. The entire world projection was created using Natural Earth Data and Mapshaper.org, with some small refinements like removing Antarctica to optimize space usage.
Custom Theme for Accessibility & Aesthetics
Since this is a visualization competition, I created custom color theme to enhance clarity and accessibility. The base colors are derived from the IBM Design Library, ensuring a colorblind-safe palette. Additional colors were selected from Paul Tol's schemes, closely aligning with the Mako gradient for a cohesive look. (source: Colorblind Safe Color Schemes). I wanted to use dark theme background bacause everyone loves using dark modes more, right? I added white labels and text for high-contrast and better readability.
Advanced Formatting & Custom Icons
To further personalize the report, I used Visual Basic Studio to integrate custom conditional formatting icons, converting PowerPoint icons into Base64 format and saving these to theme json. These icons, alongside custom navigation buttons, enrich user interaction.
Dynamic & Interactive Features
- Adaptive Title Background: The main title background dynamically changes color based on the selected country or legislative status, providing an immediate visual cue.
- Custom Year Slider: A "single-select year slider" was implemented by combining "less than or equal to" slicer styling with visual filters (top N), ensuring users can easily focus on the most relevant data points.
- Toggle Button for Table View: A bookmark-based toggle button allows users to seamlessly switch between the main visual map and a simple table format.
Trend Analysis
A dedicated trend page visualizes the historical growth in the number of countries legalizing same-sex marriage, offering a clear perspective on global legislative progress.
