Round 3 - The Success Cut

The Success Cut is my entry for the 2026 Power BI Dataviz World Champs — Round 3: Lights, Camera, Insight!

For this challenge, I wanted to build something that felt more like a film story than a traditional dashboard. The report starts with one simple question:

What makes a movie successful?

The answer depends on how success is defined, so the analysis follows four lenses:

Scale — reported revenue
Efficiency — revenue relative to reported budget
Love — confidence-adjusted audience rating
Reach — TMDB vote activity

The central idea is that there is no universal winner. A movie can dominate the box office without being especially efficient, stretch a small budget without attracting a large audience, or earn exceptional approval without becoming the most widely discussed film.

The story is organised into four acts:

01 — Change the lens. Change the winner.
Follow the yearly podium from 2000 to 2023 and see which films lead under each definition of success.

02 — Different games. Different winners.
Compare financial performance with audience response and explore why commercial giants are not always the most efficient or most loved films.

03 — No genre wins every game.
See how genre rankings shift across Scale, Efficiency, Love and Reach, and discover the leading films within each genre.

04 — The Final Cut.
Review the main conclusions, then use the interactive movie finder to create a personalised shortlist based on genre, language, rating, release period and runtime.

The report analyses 5,793 eligible films across 24 release years and 19 genres. Eligibility rules, metric definitions and data limitations are explained throughout the experience so that the results remain transparent and responsible.

The solution combines native Power BI visuals with DAX-driven HTML cards, custom navigation, contextual tooltips, dynamic narrative text, bookmarks and an interactive end-credits sequence. Accessibility was also built into the report through clear labels, descriptive alt text, logical tab order and strong contrast.

The Success Cut: four lenses, four winners — and no single ending.
