PowerBI DataViz World Championships ended just a few weeks ago …, and happily it’s time for another contest!
I’m thrilled to share with you my report for Fabric Community DataViz Contest for the month of May 2025.
Every year, millions of birds leave their breeding grounds for winter quarters.
I created my own kind ‘bird migration atlas’, where you can find maps, photos, charts, bird profiles and more.
My main goal was to create a clear, simple, easy to use and insightful report that may interest anyone – not just a bird enthusiast.
Hope you enjoy this content. I would appreciate any feedback.

Note: unfortunatelly I can’t unlock Azure maps on my account, custom visual ‘Flow Map’ didn't work properly - I could’t visualize the exact travel path of a bird ☹.
P.S. I chose orange as the dominant color because it refers to „warm countries” - and as we know, birds migrate very often to warmer countries in winter.

The report consists of three main sections/pages:
- Basics – introduction / how, why, and where do birds migrate?
Things you might especially like:
● Different photos of birds for each type of migration by distance traveled (use scroll to slide).
(Btw. the button slicer can also serve as a image carousel😊, I use it becouse it loads images faster than custom visuals).
- Explore - details about each bird species in the dataset.
Things you might especially like:
● The IUCN Red List Diagram:
– the dark red triangular indicator changes it’s positioin depending on the bird's position on the list.
● Migration map:
– see the bird migration path, their habitat area.
– the subtitle shows information about origin and destination countries.
– use Migration route slicer to filter the data. - Discover / Birds in the spotlight - discover Top 10 birds (by selected indicator) and birds in your area.
Things you might especially like:
● Top 10 Birds by Selected Indicator:
– select indicator from a button slicer (3 different options) and see Top 10 birds of your choice
– the chart has auxiliary side drop lines, that point the position of a bird in the ranking (1st, 4th and 7th)
– if you hover over the chart you will see a Tooltip with a picture of a bird and also a ‘progress bar’, that reflects the bird's position in the ranking
● Birds in you area:
– use filters and map to discover birds in you area
– if you hover over a table you will see a Tooltip with a picture of a bird and the bird’s position on the IUCN Red List (color corresponds to the icon that you can find in the table).

Dataset:

Note: the data was enriched by me, for example by calculating the distance between coordinates using Haversine formula.
Birds profiles:
Physical characteristics, key features, habitat and diet etc. comes from publicly available data that can be found on the web.
I created an additional table summarizing all of the information to make the report more insightful and attractive.

Images and Icons:
All images in the report were generated by AI. Icons come from https://www.svgrepo.com.

Instructions:
Navigation: to switch between report pages, use the panel in the upper right corner (or also icons in the middle in home page).
Help tooltlips: most of the report elements contain additional information, hover over the question mark icon to get details.
Filtering: use slicers to filter the data (marked with graphical symbol).
Units: distance is expressed in kilometers (km) and length in centimeters (cm) or meters (m).
