Bones of a Feather: Exploring Avian Skeletal Adaptations
This report is developed as an entry for the Fabric Community DataViz Contest – May 2025, hosted by the Power BI Community. The objective of this contest is to showcase creative and insightful data visualizations using Microsoft Power BI using the month’s theme: Birds
For this entry, the "Birds, Bones, and Living Habits" dataset by Zhang Juefei is used as the foundation for analysis. The dataset contains detailed anatomical measurements—specifically the length and diameter of five key bones (humerus, ulna, femur, tibiotarsus, and tarsometatarsus)—across a diverse range of bird species, along with their classification type (Swimming Birds , Wading Birds , Terrestrial Birds , Raptors , Scansorial Birds, Singing Birds). By visualizing and analyzing these skeletal features, the report aims to highlight how different bird types can be distinguished based on bone structure alone. The visual insights presented here demonstrate the potential of Power BI in uncovering biological patterns and enhancing our understanding of functional morphology in birds.
