The 10th anniversary of Power BI is a unique opportunity to express our passion for this tool and our gratitude to all those involved in its continued development.
Power BI is not only great at connecting data, it also connects people, in many cases significantly impacting their professional careers or just personal lives.
Personally, I love DAX, I love Power BI, so I just had to take part in this amazing initiative.
After all, a 10th anniversary only happens once!
Besides, I was very curious about how different people would present very similar data. What path they would take, and how creative they would be in data visualization.
The judges will definitely have a lot of work😊
I would appreciate any feedback.
(report will be embedded later, so below you can see some screenshots).
Submission
My entry is a combination of a classic dashboard and data storytelling about the adaptation of communication technologies in the second decade of the 20th century (I used slightly different data than that provided on the competition home page).
Entry consists of three main sections:
Layout
The appearance and layout of all pages is consistent and maintained in the same color pallete.
The elements are arranged with the greatest care, every little detail has been taken care of.
Help tooltips
Most of the report elements contain additional information, hover over the question mark icon to get details.
Titles and subtitles
Particular attention was paid to titles and subtitles.
The titles of charts, tables and maps change dynamically, depending on the user's selection.
The subtitles contain interesting informations, it is worth to followe them carefully.
Things you might especially like
Maps / Locate Top Country button - all maps are filled with gradient (the darker the color, the higher the value is). In many scenarios the country with the best result is very small and invisible on the world map, so using the „Locate Top Country” button you can go directly to the country with the highest value.
Line chart / Choosing additional lines – in each technology’s page you will find a line chart (located in the central area of the page) with light blue "+" symbol. After pressing it, a menu appears with the option to select additional lines (trend line and YoY growth).
Tables / dynamic context change - in each technology’s page you will find a table (located in the lower right corner of the page). When there is only one Continent selected on the dedicated slicer, the table shows top 5 countries in each continent. Otherwise the table shows the Top 1 country in each continent, according to the indicator.
Area chart / custom tooltip – in each technology’s page you will find an area chart (located in the upper right corner of the page). At this moment, when you add a legend to the chart, there is no possibility to sort the legend by Value, so the default tooltip is hard to read (especially when there is more than 4 elements).
That’s why I created custom tooltip, that gives the user a clear picture of the data distribution and also includes additional information.
Note: you can switch between Continet or Country view, tooltip adapts to the context.
I used only native visuals, pure PBI and DAX.
Hope you enjoy my submission.

Interesting report, Good job👍
Hi @lmolus and congrats for your submission. I liked it ! (looking forward to see it live !).
In a nutshell the features I liked :
The welcome page appears clear and sets out what the dashboard will cover. Especially with this navigation pane on the right, with concise page descriptions, seems to provide straightforward access to different sections. That's good !
The visual representing the growth rate of each technology by continent effectively highlights what was at the heart of this test dataset, I should have done one visual like that !! (arghhh. too late 😅)
I'm looking forward to play with the map visual (combined with the continent slicer) and the "Locate Top Country" is a also a good idea !
Regarding the "Key insights" page, I am curious whether it is dynamically generated based on the continent selection or if it remains static regardless of user input. The timeline of global events also looks informative and relevant (I guess this is also static and does not depend of the continent or years potentially selected in previous pages ?)
So : good job !! the design and structure of the dashboard seem well thought out 👍
Kind regards,
pj
It seems like my reply to you didn't save...
"Key insights" page is static, my intention was to present the most important facts, that come to mind after reading the report and going through each sections.
I also selected only several global events that contributed to the technological transformation in the period under study.
You should definitely try to combine "Locate Top Country" button with "Play" button located under the map.
It's quite a fun!
I appreciate your feedback Pierre.
Thanks😊
Hi Pierre!
The page with Key Insisghts is static; my intention was only to summarize the most important facts, that the user should noticed while going through the individual sections of the report. Global events are also static - I chose only 10 with a global character.
You should definitely see the "Locate Top Country" button combined with the "Play" button below the map.
It's quite a fun!
I appreciate your feedback, thank you😊
Please note that each of the 4 pages dedicated to individual technology could have been replaced by one page with a slicer allowing to switch between technologies.
To ensure a better experience and consistency, I used pagination.
The only difference between these pages is a main filter applied to each page.
