We’re excited to announce some upcoming changes to the Fabric Community Platform that will enhance how members discover and connect with user groups. The Fabric Community Platform will soon solely serve as a central hub for visibility and discovery—helping more members find your group.
This means the platform will no longer be the primary space for user group leaders to manage member engagement and host events. To support vibrant, active communities, all user groups will now be required to maintain an external location for group interaction.
This change aims to foster deeper connections and more dynamic interactions within user groups, ensuring that members have a dedicated space to share ideas, collaborate on projects, and host events. By transitioning to external platforms, user groups can leverage specialized tools and features that cater to their specific needs, enhancing the overall experience for all members.
If you are a user group leader and your group already uses platforms such as Meetup, LinkedIn, EventBrite, Facebook, or any other site to host events, host discussions, or manage your group, you're well-positioned for this transition.
We know that change can take some adjustment, and we’re here to support you every step of the way. Together, we’re excited to grow a thriving, connected Fabric community that empowers every user group to shine. If you have any questions or need a hand, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at ms-data@microsoft.com — we’re happy to help!
Why is the Fabric Community Platform changing?
A: The Fabric Community Platform is evolving to better support discovery and connection. We’re focusing on helping members find your group, while giving you the flexibility to host events and discussions where your community is most active—like Meetup, LinkedIn, or Facebook.
I’m a User Group leader, what exactly do I need to do?
A: If your group already has an external platform, make sure it’s linked in your group profile:
What platforms are supported for external group hosting?
A: You can use any platform that fits your needs! Common choices include:
Note: If you are considering LinkedIn Groups, we recommend making sure that your group is public and listed so that it is searchable for community members who want to locate you. Additionally, please ensure that your Code of Conduct is posted.
Note: If you are considering Meetup Free, we are working with the Meetup team on a short-term solution to grant extended capabilities as you get your group running to meet our requirements for Microsoft to provide funding for your Meetup Pro subscription.
I’m a User Group leader, will I still be able to update my Fabric group page?
A: Yes! You can still manage your group’s information and keep your discovery page updated. However, discussions and events will be hosted externally.
I'm a User Group member, what do I need to do?
A: Right now, you don't need to take any action. Once the community platform changes roll out, your User Group will continue its activities on an external platform (such as Meetup, LinkedIn, etc.).
At that time, you'll simply join your group on its new platform, where you can sign up for events and stay engaged with your group leaders and fellow members. We'll make sure links and next steps are easy to find when the changes go live! If you have any questions regarding the transition, please reach out to your user group leaders or don't hesitate to reach out to us at ms-data@microsoft.com.
