Help!

Here's the sad story:

I created a report which was successfully "published to web" via the embed code. All was beautiful. I made a few cosmetic changes only to the report in the Desktop- no changes to the data model, connections, permissions, etc. Mostly just to deal with the recent version update that threw off the alignment of text in the navigation buttons, and to add a hyperlink. I made these cosmetic changes to the report in the Desktop, and then published to the PBI service - all good, looks great in the Service. Waited for the changes to take effect on the public website . . . . . meanwhile, refreshed the data with updated numbers. The data refresh was showing up on the website, but not the cosmetic changes to the report. I gave it a week. No dice.

So . . . I thought I could delete the embed code, and re-publish to web, and that would fix it. HUGE mistake. Because now I don't have the option to PUBLISH TO WEB. It just doesn't show up on the menu. I've looked at this post:

because it seemed very similar, and tried everything suggested many times over. The publish to web menu option just isn't there. Not in reading view, not in edit view, not in reading view after editing the report. It shows up on other reports that have never been published, but not on this one. In fact, I do have another published report that seems to be working properly.

Double-checked that publish to web is still allowed in the Admin Portal - nothing changed there. Beyond frustrated. I thought maybe I needed to give it some time to do its thing. It's been about 3 hours now.

I've tried copying the report with a different name, starting with the desktop report, publish to PBI service and then tried copying the report on the service with a different name - still no "Publish to Web" option.

Please help! We just rolled this dashboard out to the public less than a month ago, and now it's broken on our public website. Not a good look.

where and how did you delete the code? how are you accessing the share to web option?

I originally set up and copied the embed code from the report in the PBI Service. This screenshot is when I have a different report open, to show that the Publish to Web option is available to me there:

When I deleted the embed code, I opened the report, went to settings and Manage Embed Codes. The screen shot below is from a different workspace, with the only other embed code I have.

When I open the report I want to publish to web, and go to Settings > Manage embed codes, it indicates that I don't have any embed codes, yet when I go to File > Embed report, the Publish to web option is not there.

hmm very odd, i have tried to recreate your issue and just not coming up with the same problem. Have there been any tenant changes to your companies service account?

So you deleted the report and republished? Or did you just push a new version over? Are you sharing it from your personal workspace or a different one? Is the report that can be shared in the same workspace?

I'll try to answer, as best as I understand the questions:

1. Have there been any tenant changes to your companies service account? No, although I'm not sure what would constitute a change. No change in licensing or anything tenancy related, as far as I'm aware. I had our IT service try to help figure this out, and I think he would have been aware of any changes, and did not mention anything.

2. So you deleted the report and republished? Or did you just push a new version over? I did not delete the report and republish, although I can try that. At first I pushed (republished from desktop to service) the same report, then tried saving a copy of the report on the service with a new name on both the desktop and service which did not solve the problem.

3. Are you sharing it from your personal workspace or a different one? Is the report that can be shared in the same workspace? The report I want to publish to web is on the Finance workspace (not my personal workspace). It is based on a data set that is in the same (Finance) workspace.

I will try deleting the report from the service and republishing it from the desktop. I'll post a reply here once I have the result.

As a follow up, I've deleted the report from the service and republished it to the service from the desktop. Still no ability to Publish to Web. FYI I believe I have the latest version of PBI Desktop:

I have gone through the listed limitations with Publish to web and cannot see a single reason why this isn't working. I am simply trying to publish a report that I have previously been able to publish, no changes to the underlying data settings (no RLS, etc). So very frustrating. And embarrassing as now the public sees a broken link.😥

I think based on the fact that its very hard to recreate this issue, its probably best you log a ticket with power bi support, do you have a pro license?

Yes, I have a pro license.

I managed to find a previous version of the report on the service that had the "Publish to web" available. What was weird was that the report was in a different workspace than the dataset. Under the list of limitations, I thought this wasn't allowed. In any case, I downloaded the pbix file and painstakingly recreated the final report on the desktop (about a 6 hour job), and published to the service in the same workspace as the data set.

I have now published an embed code for our public website - Yeah! What is weird is that even though I have an active embed code, the "Publish to web" menu item is STILL available. I'm too chicken to see what happens if I tried to publish to web again. See screen shots below.

Thank you for your help. I will mark this as solved, although the solution was more of a workaround than a fix!

For those who might encounter same issue like this. There is also a possibility that power bi settings such as row level security can restrict you from publishing your work into public website. This is to prevent your work led to accidental public exposure that contains sensitive data. Just sharing what I discovered. 🙂
