Hello, I am a student from India interested in data science and cloud. I am new to Microsoft Fabric and want guidance on how to start learning data science with Fabric. Please suggest beginner‑friendly videos, documentation, and small project ideas. Thank you.

If you're just starting out with Fabric, my best advice is: don't try to swallow the whole ocean at once. It's massive and gets overwhelming fast.

What worked for me was getting solid on the basics first—mainly SQL, Python, and Power BI. Once those make sense, Fabric-specific stuff like OneLake, Notebooks, Pipelines, and Semantic Models start clicking together way faster.

Microsoft Learn has some really solid hands-on labs to get your hands dirty. After that, just pick a tiny end-to-end project (like a quick sales dashboard or a churn model) and build it. You’ll hit a few walls, but that's honestly where the actual learning happens.

Take it one piece at a time—it gets easier! Let us know if you run into any weird bugs or get stuck.

Hi pinkuk,

I would start with the Get started with Microsoft Fabric learning path to understand workspaces, lakehouses, notebooks and the main Fabric experiences.

After that, I would move to the Data Science and Machine Learning learning path. It takes you through data exploration, model training, evaluation and MLflow inside Fabric.

For hands-on practice, the end-to-end Data Science tutorial is probably the best next step because it covers the full workflow from ingesting and cleaning data to training a model and presenting the results in Power BI.

A good first project could be:

Customer churn prediction
House-price prediction
Student performance analysis

I would keep the first version small: load one dataset into a Lakehouse, explore it in a notebook, train one model, track it with MLflow and create a simple Power BI report from the results.

That will teach you much more than trying to study every Fabric feature before building anything.

Microsoft provides a 60-day free trial which is great but once that ends you lose access.

Since you're a student looking to learn and develop data science skills on Microsoft Fabric, I could totally see you wanting more than 60 days. Unfortunately, you can't get access to Fabric via a personal email address/account. It's intended for businesses.

To get around this, I got a Microsoft 365 Business Standard subscription and created a domain and business email account. I then used that to create my own personal Microsoft Fabric instance. Be careful though. Even an F2 is expensive. But you can pause it when you're not using it and that will save you a lot of money.

It's also good to check this free workshop, it's hands-on training designed for analysts working with Power BI and Microsoft Fabric. You can get hands-on experience on how to analyze data and build reports, using Fabric. It covers key concepts like working with lakehouses, creating reports, and analyzing data in the Fabric environment.

More than that Microsoft all the time provide trial or discounts for students, so it's all the time to check if you're student for trial eligibility and discounts since sometimes they don't offer trial or discounts to all but students and sometimes to unemployed.

nbleonhard You might correct me if I'm wrong, but it's good that you mentioned the 60 days trial option.
