Migrating to a new tenant and switching connection in Excel on semantic model.

Hi community,

We are right now in the middle of a migration from one tenant to another at my current company. We have deployed our semantic models to our new tenant and switched connections on our power BI reports. However, a lot of people in our organisation use the semantic models in Excel. I haven't found a way yet to switch connection.

Does anyone know how to do this?

In the new tenant please check these settings are enabled:

• Allow XMLA endpoints and Analyze in Excel with on-premises datasets.
• Users can work with Power BI semantic models in Excel using a live connection .
• Confirm that users have the required permissions (e.g., Build permission or Contributor role in the workspace)

Open the Excel file connected to the semantic model.
• Navigate to Data > Connections and select the existing connection.
• Click Properties > Definition, then update the connection string to point to the new tenant’s semantic model endpoint. The endpoint URL for Power BI Premium or Fabric capacity can be found in your workspace settings under “Connection Link”

Hi NilendraFabric.

The problem is that I cannot switch to the new accounts for the new tenant in Excel. I get the following error: "Something went wrong. [4vt9f]"

try these

Open Excel and go to File > Options > Save > Delete Cached Files.
• Sign out of all accounts in Excel via File > Account, then restart Excel and sign in with the correct account for the new tenant

If issues persist, contact Microsoft Support

If clearing the cache and switching accounts didn’t resolve the issue, the problem might be related to residual authentication tokens or Excel storing old tenant metadata. Try the following:

Go to Control Panel -> Credential Manager and remove any stored credentials related to Power BI or Microsoft 365.
In Excel File -> Account, check if there are any lingering connections. If necessary, remove all accounts, close Excel, and sign in fresh.
Instead of modifying the existing one, open a new Excel workbook, go to Data -> Get Data -> From Power BI and connect to the new semantic model. This ensures Excel doesn’t retain old tenant settings.
Try signing in with a different user from the new tenant on a fresh machine or Excel instance. If it works, the issue might be account-specific or due to local Excel configurations.
If none of this works, checking the Excel logs or Power BI service logs might reveal additional details on the authentication failure.
