Hello everyone,

I am currently exploring Microsoft Fabric as part of my Data Engineering and advanced analytics journey. With Fabric Data Days underway, I want to follow a structured and effective learning path that helps me build a strong foundation in Fabric Data Engineering.

I would appreciate insights from experienced members on the following:

• What is the most effective learning path for beginners in Fabric Data Engineering?
• Are there specific modules, videos, or hands-on labs from Fabric Data Days that you highly recommend?
• For beginners preparing for the DP-700 certification, which concepts or practical skills should be prioritized?
• Any common challenges or mistakes that new learners should be aware of?

Thank you in advance for your guidance and support.
Looking forward to learning from this community.

Hi Youraj8271 ,

Great question — and welcome to the Fabric journey. It can feel big at first, but once you follow a structured path, everything starts connecting very naturally. Since Fabric Data Days are happening right now, this is actually the best time to start because the learning content is fresh, practical, and aligned with what real data engineers use in projects.

From experience, the most effective way for beginners to learn Fabric Data Engineering is to build your foundation in three simple layers:
first understand the Lakehouse basics, then learn how to transform data with notebooks or pipelines, and finally connect everything to Power BI. This gives you the full “Fabric mindset,” and once that clicks, the more advanced pieces become much easier.

For Fabric Data Days content, the hands-on labs around Lakehouse, Delta tables, Data Factory pipelines, and notebooks are the most helpful for beginners. They walk you through real scenarios instead of just theory. If any session explains how the Lakehouse, Warehouse, and Power BI work together, those are absolutely worth watching because that’s the core of DP-700.

If you're preparing for DP-700, focus on understanding the Lakehouse architecture, Delta Lake fundamentals, ingestion patterns, shortcuts, SQL analytics, and the basics of governance and security. You don’t need to master everything at once, but being comfortable with how data moves through Fabric — from landing storage to curated tables to reports — will make the exam much easier.

New learners often make the mistake of trying to learn everything in Fabric at once. My advice is to avoid that. Pick one workflow, practice it end-to-end, and then expand. Also try to spend time in the actual workspace — hands-on practice is what really builds confidence.

You’re definitely on the right track by asking the community. Feel free to ask more as you continue — many of us learned Fabric the same way.

Hope this helps. If so, please give a Kudos 👍 or mark as Accepted Solution ✔️

– Gopi Krishna

If I answered your question or solved your problem, mark this post as the solution.

Starting out with Microsoft Fabric Data Engineering is all about getting comfortable with OneLake, which acts like a single OneDrive for all your organization's data. A great way to begin is by learning the Medallion Architecture, a method where you organize data into three steps: Bronze for raw data, Silver for cleaned-up data, and Gold for final, ready-to-use reports. For your learning path, you should focus heavily on the official DP-700 Microsoft Learn modules, especially the hands-on labs where you build a Lakehouse and set up Data Factory pipelines. When preparing for the DP-700 exam, make sure you prioritize learning how to write basic data scripts using PySpark in Notebooks, and understand how Delta Lake saves files so they load incredibly fast. A common mistake many beginners make is using low-code Dataflows for massive data tasks instead of using Spark Notebooks, which can slow things down. Also, remember that a Lakehouse is built for flexible coding with Spark, while a Data Warehouse is for traditional SQL, so try not to mix up their purposes. Stick to the hands-on labs, practice moving data back and forth, and you will build a solid foundation in no time.
