Failed to preview report.

I am trying to develop paginated report. I have created shared dataset on Power BI Report Server. While working on the report using Report Builder, I am able to connect to shared dataset successfully, then I have added dataset but upon clicking the run button, I receive a "Failed to preview" error message.

I kindly suggest the following steps that might help you resolve the issue

1.Verify the data source settings and make sure the credentials have sufficient privileges for the task.

2.Run the query directly in the database to check whether it executes correctly.

3.Check and correct the parameter definitions and mappings in the dataset properties.

4.Verify that all fields used in the report are available in the data set and update the report if required.

5.Migrate to the latest version of Report Builder to have the benefits of bug fixes and updates.

I tried with the sample data and providing the screenshot of preview below for your reference.

I am able to develop the report, however, when I attempt to execute it by pressing the run button, I encounter a "Failed to preview" error. I have uploaded the report to Power BI Server, where it functions correctly.

Since the report works correctly on the Power BI Server but fails to preview in Report Builder, here are a few steps which might help you to resolve the error.

1.Check the Report Builder version you are using is fully compatible with the Power BI Report Server version.
2. Verify the data source configuration in Report Builder, as settings might differ between the server and local environment.
3. Confirm there are no network issues or firewall settings blocking the connection when previewing the report locally.
4. Simplify the report by reducing the data size to check if the preview works.
5. Check all necessary database drivers on your local machine are up to date.

I began encountering this error when utilizing a shared datasorce. When I do not use a shared datasource, I can preview the report without any issues. However, the moment I incorporate the shared dataset, the error occurs.

I confirmed this by using a standard SQL connection, which functions properly and allows me to preview the report. So I belive that the database drivers are not the the problem.

Furthermore, I tried importing the shared datasource, assigned a standard title, and ran the report, but I encountered the same error. It is worth noting that since the dataset has not been added, size should not be a concern.

From the information provided, it looks like the issue might be related to the configuration or permissions of the shared datasource. Here are some reasons that might help you.

1.Shared datasource might not have the necessary permissions to access the data when the report is run.Check the permissions.
2.Double-check the configuration settings for the shared datasource.
3.Clear any cached data in Report Builder which might cause issues when previewing newly created reports.

Hi,

This is the screenshot of the error I am getting.
I think it may be the as you suggested the report doesn't have permission for the sharepoint location where the data is stored, but it is public/open to organisation, so not sure what else I can do to give permission?

Ensure Report Builder uses your Windows credentials for the SharePoint data source and that you can access the URL directly in a browser. Running Report Builder as Administrator might also help.
