Power BI Report Server: Not Able to Refresh

To Whom It May Concern:

I need some help please.

I have Power BI Report Server Set up with a Hospital Organization. Please do not confuse this with Power BI Service and or Fabric, I am using Power BI Report Server.

No matter what dashboard I have published, I am not able to schedule a refresh, where I am getting the below error:

An error has occurred. The item '/Any dashboard published' cannot be found.'

The error makes no sense to me as its published, I am able to access it, use it etc. I have embeded my credentials in the dashboard. I am successful in connections with the data source. I have been back and forth reading on Microsoft's website were explainations do not make sense. I have looked on Youtub, but, they only provide demonstrations using Power BI Service, "not" Power BI Report Server.

Check out the PBIRS log (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Power BI Report Server\PBIRS\LogFiles) and find out which error is.

First, you need to check whether the following service URL can be accessed normally:

It should look something like this:

If you can't access it, you can't create a scheduled refresh. Here are some things you need to try:

1. Try to use a domain user with permissions:

2.Try using the sa as the database credentials:

It is recommended to open the browser developer mode and check the error code, which should be the following query:

Finally, check your log file below:

The log file will be located in your installation directory, and below is the default path

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Power BI Report Server\PBIRS\LogFiles

Please reference the attached screen shots.

The below feedback did "not" solve the problem The problem still is transpiring.

1.) I have changed the Serive Account to "Use another account: " with my credentials.

Please note: Service Account: When changing from "Use built-in account" to "Use another account:" the following transpired that is "not" indicated in the below feedback:

When clicking on applying, it prompts to "Backup Encryption Key" I do not understand why its asking me this. When I click on the elipses for "File Location:" I am seeing three different files:

a.) Encryption Key.snk,

b.) Power BI Encryption Key SA.snk and

c.) Updated Encryption Key Power BI.snk.

I used Power BI Encryption Key SA.snk

2.) Next, I have changed the Database Credentials to SA with PW.

Also, The Web Service URL has not changed, please see attached of what I am seeing:

Note: I have created two folders in Power BI Report Server Home as well as a few different Power BI Dashboards.

Thank you so much for coming back here and for the helpful information. Based on your last reply, I found out that there are no items in your web portal, which is the core reason for the occurrence: The item '/Any dashboard published' cannot be found.

Try accessing the Web service url directly instead of the domain name to check if there is a problem with the Report Server configuration.

If the URL in the web service is accessible and displays any items in your web portal, there is a problem with your domain access.

Normally, there are some folders in your web portal that will also appear on this page:

It is recommended that you press F12 to open the browser developer mode when opening the web service URL and check the error message:

If your environment allows you to reconfigure Report Server, you may want to consider reconfiguring it. This method is the last resort, and you should not even choose it until you have checked the previous information. To reconfigure, you need to pre-retain your reports locally. If you're just getting started with Report Server and only have a small number of reports (with copies locally), you might want to consider it.
Or you can configure it in your other test machines to determine whether the configuration is successful, and you need to meet the following two points:
1. The web service url can access and display any project on the Power BI Report server normally
2. Be able to access the Web Portal URL normally and enter the portal.

The feedback you provided is the exact same steps I already have taken to open the URL, which is how I was able to take a screen shot and post it here in this forum, thank you.

I appreciate your feedback and attention in this matter. Can you please provide steps to re-configuring the report server? What part needs to be reconfigured?

Just to be clear:

When I acccess the Web Service URL, in the Report Server Configuration Manager, I am 'not' seeing two different folders, as well as several Power BI Dashboards. I do have back up copies of my dashboards. So, I am not concerned with loosing anything at this point.

I am 'not' new to programming developing Power BI Dashboards, as I attended a Power BI Summit Hosted by Microsoft a few years ago, and, have developed Dashboards for different organizations in the past. However, I never installed Power BI Report Server before, first for me and the hospital I work at.

Please provide feedback to re-configuration steps, thank you.

Here's the complete installation and configuration process you can follow:

First, I download Power BI Report Server, here I select the January 2024 version (you can choose a different version):

Download Microsoft Power BI Report Server- September 2024 from Official Microsoft Download Center

Here I'm going to take the development version as an example, and you need to deploy it with your corresponding license:

Next, let's start configuring the Report Server:

Next, test if it's configured correctly:

Now let's start uploading a report and setting up a scheduled refresh:

Refresh our report server and you'll find the Power BI report we just uploaded.

Configure credentials and scheduled refreshes:

By following the detailed steps above, you will be able to properly set up a scheduled refresh for your report.

Good Morning,

Thank you for the feedback, but we are not using the Developer, as we have Key(s). Selecting "Developer" is a different process than selecting a "Key." Also, my previous question was not answered pertaining to "Key's." In addition too, we are installing the software on a server, not a desk top computer or laptop. I will continue to look into this and provide feeddback when I am able too.

Thank you very much for providing this reponse. As it turns out, this was the solution. Implementing the suggested changes solved the problem after a complete shut down and start back up of the Power BI Report Server. I scheduled a refresh for a Power BI Dashboard that pulled over 8 million records with aggregations successfully. The refresh of the data took less than 30mins to complete.
