topic Hierarchy from SAP BW via Import mode to PowerBI in Report Server

Hi everybody

We use SAP BW as the backend. There I have characteristics with several hierarchies and these hierarchies have several levels, e.g. G/L account hierarchy (by G/L account, by DB level, by result, etc.) or cost center hierarchies or profit center hierarchies or product hierarchies (by product, by sales, etc.)

Can these hierarchies - i.e. on the one hand the hierarchy with several levels per characteristic and on the other hand - if a characteristic has several hierarchies (with several levels) - these can be loaded into PowerBi? I was told that no hierarchies or max. 1 LEvel can be loaded with the import mode, as hierarchies can only be loaded completely with the DirectQuery mode. Is this correct? Unfortunately, I am currently receiving an error message in import mode.

Greetings

Hi,Anonymous</LI-USER> . I am glad to help you.
I found that there is indeed such a problem when I checked the internet for related issues.
The error you describe occurs when the connector loads multiple Hierarchies.
The general solution is to load data selectively (load the data you need to use)
Selecting too many Hierarchies can cause the backend to consume a lot of resources, which can lead to performance issues and errors.
Some users have reported no such problems when loading only one Hierarchy.
I also found information in the Microsoft documentation that it appears to be a limitation of SAP BW data loading performance.

Other users have stated that using DirectQuery connection mode gives a good experience. (compared to import connection mode)
We hope that the following documentation will help you.
DirectQuery and SAP Business Warehouse (BW) in Power BI - Power BI | Microsoft Learn
Solved: Querying multiple hierarchies of the same dimensio... - Microsoft Fabric Community
SAP BW Data Load Performance and Limitation Issues - Microsoft Fabric Community
SAP BW/4HANA Connectivity Options in Microsoft Pow... - SAP Community

I hope my suggestions give you good ideas, if you have any more questions, please clarify in a follow-up reply.
Best Regards,
Carson Jian,
If this post helps, then please consider Accept it as the solution to help the other members find it more quickly.

Hi,Anonymous</LI-USER> .Thank you for your reply.
I think you might be able to connect the semantic model through tabular editor external tools and create hierarchies through tabular editor or do other data processing.
Tabular Editor 2.x | TabularEditor
External tools in Power BI Desktop - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

I hope my suggestions give you good ideas, if you have any more questions, please clarify in a follow-up reply.
Best Regards,
Carson Jian,
If this post helps, then please consider Accept it as the solution to help the other members find it more quickly.
