Hooray... An unexpected error occurred. Issue on single report

Hi all,

several days ago i upgarded our Report Server to May 2024. Today a report creator informed me that one of his reports is not working anymore. The report ist doing fine in PowerBI Desktop, but throws an so loved "unexpected error" on the Report Server:

This "ErrorDialogHelperText" is also something that came up after Janurary 2024 update. So no solution so far for this as well, but its only a secondary problem.

I checked the logs on the PBRS server and this is what i get from the RSPortal.log (note that I have replaced my local username with domain\xxxx):

I get these "Received a request with an unmatched or no authentication scheme. 401" messages when opening a working report as well, so besides a bad feeling that this message shouldn't be thrown at all, I'm not sure if this is really causing the problem.

We are not using Analysis Service at all, so the data source is a local SQL server and the report uses DirectQuery.

I also receive an certificate error in the event viewer, but the data source in the report is not marked to use "secure connection". I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think the SQL server is not configured for encrypted connections at all.

Any idea how I can troubleshoot this error?

Hi Rascho ,

Repeated “A request with a mismatch or no authentication scheme has been received.401” messages indicate authentication problems. These may not directly result in a report error, but are worth addressing:

1.Authentication Configuration: Ensure that the authentication settings on the report server are configured correctly. This may involve checking the web.config file or the Report Server Configuration Manager.
2.Network and Firewall Settings: Sometimes, network policy or firewall settings can interfere with authentication. Ensure that the necessary ports and protocols are open and properly configured.

A certificate error in the Event Viewer indicates that the server is trying to establish a secure connection but has encountered an untrusted certificate. You can configure an encrypted connection for SQL Server.

Try to look for these problems and subsequently roll back the report server version if that doesn't work.

Hello!

You need to navigate to "Edit the system environment variables" in the "Environment Variables" section. Create a new variable with the following details:

Variable name: PBI_SQL_TRUSTED_SERVERS
Variable value: *

Once you've done that, restart your service or the machine to apply the changes.
