If I write a connector for Power BI Desktop do also need to create an Azure gateway?

I'm evaluating Power BI for my 3,000-person company. I'll need to get data from MongoDB and Elasticsearch, which Power BI doesn't currently support. Let's say I followed this guy's advice and wrote a connector from Power BI Desktop to Elasticsearch. I then upload the workbook to Power BI on the web and tell it to refresh itself every week. To do the refresh:

Won't Power BI on the web need an Azure gateway into Elasticsearch?
Could the desktop connector I wrote serve?
If not, what else would I need to create?
Roughly how many hours would that take?

In general, it seems like building a desktop connector is not the end of what's needed.

Hi sbeste,

Currently, custom data connectors only support in Power BI desktop. In your scenario, it won't be able to schedule refresh dataset connected with your own data connectors in service.
