When you upgraded to SQL 2019 did you update your license key of sql server as well ?

Also make sure that you are able to access SQL server from the machine where you hosted your PBIRS.

We always follow Power BI Report Server's release to upgrade our on-premise Power BI Report Server. After upgrding our Power BI Report Server from September 2021 to January 2022, an error was thrown. Please see the image below. I couldn't configure Power BI Report Server's database because of that error. Our Power BI Report Server was installed on Windows Server 2012 R2 (the server name is PBIRS) and accessed a remote SQL Server 2016 (the server name is DBServer) when this error happened. I requested supports from a Microsoft forum and they sent me here.

Recently we upgraded our Power BI Report Server to Windows Server 2019 (PBIRS) and also upgraded its remote database server to SQL Server 2019 (DBServer). After upgrading, the only "Report Server Instance" is DBServer's SSRS so it's no way to connect our Power BI database on DBServer from PBIRS' Report Server Configuration Manager. All the Power BI dashboards are working good. The scheduled data refresh are updating data daily.

So what's your suggestions to resolve the Report Server Connection issue?

Thanks in advance!

Hi FarhanAhmed,

Many thanks for your reply. 2 questions below are confused me. Please advise.

Do I re-apply the SQL Server license if the 2019 ISO is downloaded from the volume licensing?

Based on the screenshot, is an "Enterprise" SQL Server required for an on-premise Power BI Report Server?

Yes, PBIRS can access DBServer through Report Server Configuration Manager. But it only can see SSRS instead of the database "PowerBI". When changing the database from ReportServer (SSRS's database) to PowerBI through "Change Database", it shows another error

We hosted the Power BI Report Server since July, 2017. A SQL Server Standard was all fine on September 2021 and all its previous releases until its January 2022 release.

Thanks again!

I resolved this issue with the dumb way.

I ran the January 2022 Power BI Report Server package to "repair" the application. This step restore the Report Server Instance to the Power BI Report Server.

After the repairs, the dashboards having the “System.Security.Crytography.CryptographicException” issue so I deleted the currect encryption key, and create and save a new one.

Deleted/uploaded the currect dashboards per requirements of the "Data sources" and applying the connection strings to all operational dashboards.

Thanks.

For some reason that error appears when switching datasets in the Report Server Configuration Manager (September, 2022 release). My solution is to run "repair".
